Mike Snell spends his work life helping teams build great software that exceeds the expectations of end users. He runs the Solutions division at CEI ( www.ceiamerica.com ). Mike and his team deliver architecture, consulting, and mentoring to clients looking for help with enterprise projects, commercial software, mobile applications, or cloud-based solutions. He is also a Microsoft Regional director.

Lars Powers is currently the director of application development at Newgistics, Inc. Prior to Newgistics, he held various technical management positions at 3M and spent many years with Microsoft as a platform evangelist focused on emerging technologies.

Should be named .NET Technologies Using Visual Studio

This book should be named .NET Technologies Using Visual Studio because it doesn't start out about Visual Studio, and it doesn't really end about Visual Studio, it goes over all about the technologies that Visual Studio works with and how to use them in Visual Studio 2015. If you want a great overview of all the technologies (Microsoft and non-Microsoft) and how to work with them in Visual Studio 2015, then this is your book. But it isn't as in-depth as I would like on anything, not even Visual Studio 2015.

I learned a lot, it's a great book for someone like me that is getting back into .NET technologies and wanting to learn all the new technologies and how they fit together, and which are supported by Microsoft. Did you know you can use Visual Studio 2015 for HTML, Java, Android, and Apple apps, etc? I didn't until I read this book.

However, if you want to go through Visual Studio in-depth, and learn about all the different screens, options, menus, and checkboxes - then buy Professional Visual Studio 2015 by Johnson.

I was hoping to learn Visual Studio in-depth before learning each of the technologies, and Professional Visual Studio 2015 by Johnson is my only choice as I write this review. But after I read that, then I'm going to read this book again, Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 Unleashed, as a great intro to using all the other technologies that I still have to learn. I really liked it, and found it very interesting. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that it really should be renamed to .NET Technologies using Visual Studio 2015 and it isn't as in-depth on Visual Studio as I was hoping for. But still, a great book.

An Overview Only

I bought this book for the purpose of learning how to use Visual Studio (VS) for developing applications, whether on the desktop or on the web. I don't have an extensive background as a programmer (mainly just VBA writing in Excel) but I knew one could use VS for some professional looking applications and so I bought this book to help get me into the program. As of today, I'm approximately half-way through reading this and I'm ready to move on to a new text like Murach's C# 2015 (just purchased) because I needed a guide to actually start building something in VS.

So here's my take: this book is basically a good overview of what can be found inside VS and what you can do with the .NET framework. It scratches the surface on a lot of topics but doesn't have the time or scope to actually get a true beginner (like myself) into building something/anything in the application. It has a brief chapter on the basics of C# and Visual Basic, but doesn't take time to explain anything about object-oriented programming; which is fair because that is not really the purpose of this book.

Visual Studio and the .NET framework is very broad in terms of what can be developed. There are whole books devoted to things like ASP.net or WPF applications and this book, even at 1320 pages, is only able to just introduce these capabilities and give the very basics of what is involved. Therefore this book is good for helping someone, like myself who knows nothing about .NET, get an overview of what all in involved/possible. To be completely frank, I see this book as the cliff notes version of the VS users manual. After this quick read, I don't know how often I'll refer back.

A very good solid book regarding Visual Studio 2015. I have been using VS 2008 Community Edition for the last 7 years. When I uograded to Windows 10 I decided to move to VS 2015.

As one would expect, a lot has changed over the last 7 years in the Visual Studio environment and it was very usefull to have a guidebook to help navigate the changes.

I was specifically interested in the changes in Visual Studio Extensibility and Automation. The chapters on those subjects are well written and helped get me started on upgrading my Add-ins to VS 2015.

My only real criticism of the book is in the discussion of the various editions of Visual Studio 2015. The comparison of the ecitions was well done and the author explained why the book focused on the Professional edition. Fair enough and reasonable. However, I deel the author should have pointed out that the FREE Community Edition can be largely upgraded to the $800.00 Professional Edition by downloading and installing the various pieces separetly.

The book is an excellent purchase if you want a good guide to Visual Studio 2015.

Outstanding!

I thought Reaper's Inc. - Brigit's Cross was fantastic, but the sequel, Reaper's Inc. - Rogue Reaper is astounding! Every page evokes an emotional response and keeps the reader glued to the story. B.L. Newport has a flair of writing that makes the action jump off of the page where the reader can see the action. Great read. There aren't enough stars to rate this one. I can't wait for the next one!!!

The Reaper's return

Brigit Malone is carrying out her position of Assistant Grim Reaper efficiently and to the very best of her ability. The threat made by Seamus Flannery nine months previously has not been carried out........Yet. Brigit is under no illusions though, that he is just biding his time to get to her in a weak moment.

John Blackwick has left Brigit in charge as Head Reaper while he opens up satellite offices round the world. Brigit is working round the clock crossing souls and trying her best to run the office. She can't even get home very often to spend time with her beloved Maggie.

The Bailey is acting up and the work load due to his increased activity is never ending. Brigit also has to face a ghost she'd rather not face from her past. Then the unthinkable happens, Seamus shows his hand at last. He has found a way to carry out his threat to Brigit. He is going after the one person Brigit would give up her immortal soul for. Will Seamus succeed in destroying Brigit?

Reapers Inc Brigit's Cross was a superb book. This second in the series is even better, if that's possible.

The characters are diverse and multidimensional. As the firm of Reapers Inc grows, so we meet more characters. Some nicer than others. But they all pull their own weight in progressing the story along at a nice pace, with twists and turns along the way.

It's fascinating to read about the dead interacting with the living. This series is giving me a whole new perception of a genre previously either ignored or read by those considered ghoulish. Personally, although I know these things can't and don't happen, a part of me wonders, what if.........

B.L Newport has a unique way with words. Her storytelling just makes me want to read more from her. She has created a wonderful set of characters, even when I'm not reading a Reapers Inc book, I'm thinking about them.

If anyone is unsure as to whether they will like the series, just buy the first book. The price is very reasonable too.

wonderful sequel of post-urban fantasy

ok - there I thought Brigit's Cross couldn't be topped and duh, the sequel is even better than the first book if that's possible. Newport expands her story on the post mortem part of urban fantasy in a totally delightful way and her characters are ever so vivid (pun intended). The story is exceptional and again I found myself looking for the sequel asap!
BTW the proofreading was again atrocious.

great format

i love how barron's presents their vocab thematically. i also love that this book comes with an audio mp3 disc and includes sentences that enable you to learn the words in useful contexts.

because i don't think enough info is provided regarding the mp3s, i'll tell you about them. the mp3s simply state the spanish words/phrases/example sentences in the order that they appear in the book. the english counterparts aren't stated. so basically the mp3s are useful as a pronunciation guide, to improve listening comprehension, and for review.

Red ink is a problem, otherwise great

I purchased this as an aid for a Spanish conversation class I'm taking and am very pleased with its general layout, grouping terms by category. I was also pleased to see it has an index, so that if you are not sure what name they would give the topic you want, but know one term that belongs in it, you can look up the term and find the page(s) with more on-topic vocabulary.

The vocabulary CD that came with the book nicely provides native pronunciation of the vocabulary, grouped by topic as in the book. (I haven't checked to see how complete it is, but it seems to track the book with both terms and examples.) Note that the CD does not provide English translation, however, and so cannot be used for self-testing of active recollection of terminology, but it will adequately reinforce the passive recognition of it. (A big plus is that it does not have the ubiquitous beep, which is so annoying in the CD accompanying Barron's 501 Spanish Verbs!)

That being said, I sincerely hope the publishers will reconsider their choice of RED INK for the Spanish text. Generally I want any unfamiliar terms--in this case, the Spanish--to jump out to my eye. Knowing English, it is easier for me to recognize fuzzy English printing than it is to interpret faded print in Spanish.
What Barron's has done, however, is to use clear black type for the English side of the vocabulary lists and a brownish red for the Spanish. Even in boldface, the red ink is very hard to read at a glance, but reading at a glance is what you want for finding suitable vocabulary quickly. In fact looking at it here at my desk beside the computer, more light seems to reflect off the side of the page with red ink than off the side with black, even though it is obviously the same paper. I feel I need to squint looking at the red print, but have no such reaction to the black.
And heaven help anyone trying to read this in low light, where I expect the red will disappear entirely.
A dark blue would have been a much better choice, I think.

I am rather disappointed with this book

I am rather disappointed with this book. The layout is fine but the major problem I have is that the sentence structures are generally not accurate and the word choices are not accurate, especially for Latin American Spanish. The book tries to distinguish when a word is Latin American or Spanish in its usage, but it doesn't seem very accurate. Several of my Spanish speaking friends have looked at the book and said that they would not say or write things the way they are in the book.

About the Author
Bettina Malle and Helge Schmickl graduated from the Vienna University of Technology in 1991 with masters of science in chemical engineering and received doctorates in technical sciences in 1993. They have published books and conduct workshops on the production of vinegar, distilled spirits, and essential oils, emphasizing the use of fruits and herbs right from the garden. Bettina and Helge have been married since 2002. That same year they moved to Klagenfurt, Carinthia (Austria), where they host their seminars and conduct research and developments in fermenting and distilling. They have two children.

Outstanding handbook for small-scale production of essential oils and hydrosols

This book contains so much information! I didn't expect producing essential oils and hydrosols via steam distillation is so easy. The best of all, you don't need much. Between 10 and 20 ounces of plant material is enough for 2 to 20 milliliters of essential oil and 500 milliliters of hydrosol, depending on the used plant species. The authors describe in detail all issues to maximize oil yield and to receive the most intense hydrosol, whether it is still shape, amount of water, distillation process, plant preparation, harvest time, etc. Finally I've found a sensible application of unused or surplus material from my herb bed which I composted all the years before. It's even possible to use dried plant materials.
Assembling your own still with equipment found in every kitchen is simple, no need to weld or solder. Nearly every imaginable essential-oil-plant is accurately described: which part to use, when to harvest, specific preparation, oil yield, and other special characteristics. The last part of the book contains step-by-step instructions for all kind of essential oil and hydrosol applications.
An outstanding handbook for everyone who intends to produce his own essential oils and hydrosols.

Excellent Book on Distilling Essential Oils

There are 2 books by Bettina Malle and Hedge Schmickl. It is worth having both. The other is Crafting Distilled Spirits. Both books are released as high quality hardbound books. The photos and illustrations are excellent. Both books are very practical. If you are going to only buy one book, then this book on the Essential Oils goes more deeply into which types of stills work, and which ones are not as effective. The book on crafting spirits gets into how to prepare the mashes. Please keep in mind that the USA has very tight regulations on alcohol production .. you must pay taxes if you produce large quantities. But there are no problems with distilling essential oils. These authors are very experienced, and they know what they are doing. Highly recommended!

The Fall of the Empire... and the Start of the Foundation, 3-1/2 stars, 403 Pages, Publ 1988

This novel has a subtle beginning. I would take a little to time reading the beginning to absorb Asimov's setting and style here. The science of psychohistory that laid out the Foundation had to start somewhere, and this is where it starts and with Hari Seldon. So there's a lot written of Seldon's early life and a lot about different sections of the Galactic Empire capital planet of Trantor. Seldon is not represented as some sort of superman, but if you've read other books in the Foundation series, as someone to admire, and is seen as a person outside of just psychohistory. Sort of like seeing the famous photograph of Albert Einstein riding a bicycle. And as others in the Empire see the potential power of psychohistory, even before Seldon does, thus begins the race to harness that power. The joy, and the point, in reading this novel is in the knowing the eventual power of psychohistory and thus how it develops. Seldon has to be persuaded to progress his theory of psychohistory by the other interesting characters in the novel. Can you imagine, early in the 20th century, having to go "come on Albert, will you at least *try* to develop the theory of General Relativity".

There are two type of readers that would be potentially interested in reading this book for the first time: those that have read the traditional Foundation series and are wondering if they should continue here with this prequel, and those that haven't read the originals and are wondering if they should start here. For the former, sure with the understanding that Asimov's style will be different 40 years after he wrote the novellas of the original series, and for the former, no, I would start with Asimov's original Foundation trilogy. His original series is almost essential 40's/50's science fiction, and if one doesn't like that series, one is not going to care about the characters and events in Prelude To Foundation.

From the Author's Note and adding Forward The Foundation which was written afterwards (I may have left out a book or two), there are 15 books (a quint-decology?) in Asimov's universe. They are:

Books 1 to 5 are Asimov's Robot series, books 6-8 his Empire series, and books 9 to 15 his complete Foundation series. They were initially separate series, but he used books 5, 9, and 10 to encompass them all into one series.

Didn't really add to my enjoyment of the original series

It's got an ok story, but the actual explanation of the ideas behind Asimovs 'psychohistory' from the original trilogy are lost behind a wordy story that only exists to claim the Robot series is connected to the Foundation one. Worth reading if you're a fan or a completest.

The Real Hari Seldon

After I finished reading Foundation and Earth and realized the future of humanity and the galaxy, I was VERY intersted to read about Hari Seldon and how psychohistory played a roll in Daneel's dated plans for humanity.
Asimov, once again, did not fail in painting a very different picture of the human, Hari Seldon. I was very used to hearing him refered to has a wise, wonderful, intelligent, caring old man. But the reality is, he was horribly normal in his personality, something I found fascinating.
I also find interesting how the people of the Foundation only really acknowledge Seldon for psychohistory, whereas, the reality was that there were hundreds of people who worked on it, and on top of that, most of the progressive breakthoughs in making psychohistory a reality were not done by Seldon himself, but by someone who history choose to forget.
It is also interesting to see the fall of the Empire before Seldon and how quickly things fell apart.
To fully understand Foundation, you must really understand the character of Hari Seldon, and thus, you must read this book. Enjoy!
