Excellent review.

I was studying for the NDEB exam and was struglling with the oral path section. I got the book which are multiple choice question and just went through them. before you know it I started to see how oral path question are worded and the topic started to kick in. Nice book for oral path if you have a lot of time to prep bc if you have a month for the exam then the book is too long if your prepping a year in advance then a good adjunct.

About the Author
Robert P. Murphy earned his Ph.D. in economics from New York University . A former professor at Hillsdale College , he is now an adjunct scholar with the Ludwig von Mises Institute and an analyst at Laffer Associates. He has worked as both an economics scholar and lecturer, as an investment/business analyst, and as a writer of popular journalism on economic topics. He lives with his wife and son in Nashville , Tennessee .

A fine analysis and defense of capitalism

Dr. Murphy valiantly crushes prevalent anti-capitalist myths, misunderstandings, and lies in this book. He also explains and defends capitalism, showing how-among other things-capitalism actually defeats things such as slavery, pollution, and racism, even though common accusations against the unregulated free-market are that it allows-even engenders-such things. Dr. Murphy also shows how when the government tries to take the place of private individuals and businesses, it operates without market incentives, is free from the punishment that bad economic choices incur on businessmen in the free market, and often fails miserably. There are also some valuable insights into major historical economic crises and issues, such as an analysis of the Great Depression and the New Deal that shows the absurdity of some of the views the Hoover and Roosevelt administrations had on economics. This is a great book that I would recommend to anyone interested in learning about economics and the free market.

Excellent Overview

Excellent overview of the capitalism/socialism argument. Has lot of good points one can use in a disagreement. I would like to have seen more of the foundation of capitalism in the Bible, for that is more where the argument lies than in just economic theory. People do not realize that the main thrust of socialism is a religious one, and that is what give it so much impetus.

Great Book for Capitalists and Economists and those who think they understand either of those two

The whole series is great and more information that most would get in school, both High school and college. I was already a fan of subject matter, and after this book I knew even more about it and the history of capitalism and the hidden gems of its application that are usually not covered in the history books or by the news.
If you want the TRUE history and lessons on capitalism or even if you think that capitalism is evil, read this book and learn what actually happens and how it actually works!

Great Starter

I got this for my 12 year old niece who is getting into fashion design as a hobby. I was a little worried as to what I was getting until it arrived. It does away with the cartoony design prints that are prevalent in a lot of other kids design kits, and look much more "professional". It is made of heavy stock paper and cardboard (for the covers) and has TONS of sheets with the faint outline of a woman's body in different poses all throughout it. The first couple pages have tons of basics and definitions and suggestions for design as well, which was handy. Definitely worth the purchase.

The field of sensory science has grown exponentially since the publication of the first edition of Sensory Evaluation of Food. Fifteen years ago, the journal Food Quality and Preference was fairly new. Now it holds an eminent position as a venue for research on sensory test methods (among many other topics).  Knowledge of the intricate cellular processes in chemoreception, as well as their genetic basis has undergone nothing less than a revolution, culminating in the award of the Nobel Prize to Buck and Axel in 2004 for their discovery of the olfactory receptor gene super family. Advances in statistical methodology have accelerated as well. Sensometrics meetings are now vigorous and well-attended annual events. And yet, some things stay the same. Sensory testing will always involve human participants. But humans are tough measuring instruments to work with. They come with varying degrees of acumen, training, experiences, differing genetic equipment, sensory capabilities, and of course, different preferences. Human foibles and their associated error variance will continue to place a limitation on sensory tests and actionable results.

Although methods continue to evolve, appreciation of the core principles of the field is the key to effective application of sensory test methods. This book has been expanded to reflect the advances in methodologies, theory, and analysis that have transpired in the last 15 years. The chapters are now divided into numbered subsections. This may be of assistance to educators who may wish to assign only certain critical sections to beginning students. In some of the opening sections instructors will find suggestions about which sections are key for fundamental understanding of that topic or method. In many chapters we have gone out on a limb and specified a “recommended procedure.” In cases where there are multiple options for procedure or analysis, we usually chose a simple solution over one that is more complex.

This text attempts to be comprehensive, yet understandable to all students at the university level. All the major sensory test methods are illustrated and discussed, including discrimination, descriptive, and affective tests. Some chapters are devoted to special topics, such as thresholds, time-intensity methods, similarity testing, color, texture, sensory quality control, qualitative research methods, consumer test methods and questionnaires, shelf life testing, an introduction to multivariate statistical techniques, and strategic sensory research. The statistical appendix provides basic instruction in the common statistical analyses for sensory evaluation with worked examples.

Harry T. Lawless is Professor of Food Science at Cornell University where he teaches sensory evaluation. He has 35 years of experience in chemosensory research and psychophysics. He spent five years in consumer testing in industry, and serves as a consultant to various food and consumer products companies on sensory test methods.

Hildegarde Heymann is Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of California at Davis where she teaches sensory evaluation of wine and sensometrics. She spent nearly 17 years at the University of Missouri as a professor of sensory science.

Required for class, also a great reference

Ordered the book from Amazon and got it very quickly. It was required for the class I'm taking, but there's a wealth of information inside, and I'm definitely hanging on to it as a reference once the course is done.

Not only does it provide a practical and theoretical overview of sensory testing, but it contains all of the statistics necessary to evaluate your experiments. There are plenty of reference tables in the appendix, removing the need to do a lot of math in order to determine significance of results.

I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is in the sensory field

Interesting and well-written book matter

The book itself is a little dry, however, it conveys what you need to know in an understandable way. It provides examples of the statistics involved in sensory testing and many other examples of real-life situations. I did enjoy this book and it worked well with the class I took.

A very academic approach to web programming

If you are familiar with the author's book (in its many editions) on programming languages, all I can say is that this is written in a similar style - thorough and very academic. There are code examples demonstrating what is being discussed, and there are summaries in each chapter as well as exercises and review questions, but you might be left wondering "what is the big picture here?". It by no means has the programming manual style of an O'Reilly book that often works through one big project - or several of them - as a way of teaching you internet programming principles. The good thing about this book is that the author has covered each subject very thoroughly. The bad thing is that you will need to read the book in short doses digesting each portion slowly as his style is quite academic and each page is densely packed with information. Since the last edition the author has added three chapters covering Ruby, Rails, and Ajax.

I would say this book is OK if you have a pretty good background in programming in C and C++ and already know something about web programming since there is only one preliminary chapter and it is rather vague. If you don't have such a background, let me recommend the various "Head First" books by O'Reilly and Associates on the subject as well as their other various books on web programming. You might wind up with more books and spend more money than if you buy this one, but I think your journey through the world of web programming will probably be more enjoyable and more comprehensible. There is no table of contents listed for this book in the product description, so I do that next:

This book has a great overview of many of the important aspects/languages required to make great web pages. I am currently using this book in a computer science class, and it has been very helpful. The only problem is that it doesn't give many specific examples. This can be overcome though through sites like [...] and [...]

fast-paced, effective overview of multiple web technologies

If you don't have a clue regarding web markup or scripting languages, as in "none", then don't get this book. You won't be able to follow. However, if you have at least written some basic scripts/markup, get ready to do some work (it will be work), and learn tons from this guy.
It's packed with information; a concise summary of nuts and bolts of multiple technologies that go into making a dynamic website.

It's brevity was part of it's challenge for me, and I think for others as well. One user gave 2 stars for "gaps in explanations" but, I strongly disagree with this poor rating. The Preface reads ".. this book is aimed at college students, not necessarily computer science majors, but anyone who has taken at least two courses in programming ... also useful for professional programmers who wish to learn Web programming ... the goal of this book is to provide the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the programming tools and skills required to build and maintain server sites on the web." I'm keeping it as a reference because the author has done such an exceptional job of covering the rudiments of entire technologies in single chapters.

If you have never even touched Javascript, or PHP, or at least some programming/scripting language, then then this book will be too much work. This book is not an intro to HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, AJAX etc.. It is a densely-packed overview of multiples of them, with the understanding that you already know how to do basic programming/scripting.

Compelling, passionate and well documented.

This book not only explains in straightforward and passionate terms the things you need to do to achieve your goals, it provides a litmus test for you to determine what you really want from life. The author provides many examples from real life and quotes scientific research on human behavior to inexorably drive home main points of the book.

The reader is compelled to take action -- not because the book makes him/her feel guilty, not because of some mind tricks, but simply because it makes sense to do so. That is, the motivation is internal, not external. This is why it works!

I have already taken several actions because of this book. For example, one of the things I would like to achieve is to win the 50-meter freestyle in the 2014 Gulf coast senior games. The author advises the reader to share personal goals with others -- well I just did. Also, I stopped swimming at the community pool that is 86 F where I'm the fastest one in the pool and started swimming at the swim team the university pool which is 75 F and where the swim team regularly works out. I also am seeking knowledge by paying for coaching and underwater video-analysis of my stroke. This last step was always missing -- knowledge. I figured that if I worked out hard by myself I could achieve my goals. Now I'm on my way. If you're coming to the 2014 Gulf Coast Senior games and swimming the 50-freestyle in the 50-55 age group -- you better bring it.

Finally, I bought a copy of this book for each of my three children with the hope that they take full advantage of their half-second and I have recommended it to several of my students.

I can count only a few books in my life that have had the exact message I was yearning for. Somehow, Matthew knew exactly what I was thinking and wrote exactly how to move forward. None of this information is new, per se, but the way it was packaged is so effective. If you take it seriously, it can change your life.

I also very much appreciate the brevity and concise writing style. So many authors mistakenly believe that more text equals a better book, but nothing could be further from the truth. The efficient style makes it much easier to really incorporate the thoughts and ideas he shares.

Bravo Matthew!!! You have a fan for life.

Great book! Introduction with counting our lives compared to "Life of universe" is bit scary, but thats how it is. Good insights, some good advices. I realised that goal setting can be really helpful. I would like to see another book from Matthew about building businesses. It seems, he has a lot to say!
