About the Author
Early on, Cinda Gault's imagination was captured by women's issues as she organized a shelter for victims of domestic violence. After completing two Masters degrees in Criminology and English, she went on to earn her PhD featuring female and Canadian national identity issues in women's writing of the 1960s and 1970s. Since then, she has taught and written about Canadian literature. Now she offers this story of a woman's epic journey with a horse and a gun.

This Godforsaken Place is an engaging story about independence -- of thought and of action. Our heroine, Abigail, is trapped in Northern Ontario. As the walls begin closing in, her father's death and the appearance of a wounded cowboy present an opportunity to break free. And she takes it. You come to this book for the historical drama. But you keep coming back for the rich, fully realized heroes. You'll love the horse too.

I love an adventure story

I love an adventure story. I especially love an adventure story starring interesting, well-developed characters. This book delivers that. I was drawn into the story by the power of the Abigail's personality. I learned a good bit of Canadian history along the way. Thoroughly enjoyable read.

I enjoyed reading this book. It gave a combination of historical information and literary fiction and created a gripping story that kept me wanting to turn the next page. The main character is a strong and likeable woman in a time when it was "a man's world" and her character develops as the story progresses so we can see her courage and determination. Interesting historical characters like Annie Oakley liven the story up and give an element of truth. The story also depicts some interesting aspects of Canadian history in the 1800's. A good read.

This book is a conversation piece on my book shelf. I love the vintage look and feel of it, but must admit that I have never opened it. After re-reading another review, I think I just might...even though I no longer live alone!

Timeless, practical and very, very funny

I found a copy of this book at an estate sale ten years ago. At first I thought it would just be fun to have on my book shelf, but when I opened it up, the wisdom poured out of it.
Written for single women moving to New York in the 30s, the author does not hesitate to instruct, cajole and browbeat her reader. You MUST own four bed jackets. You MUST NOT have too much antique furniture.
And the overriding theme of the book: when you are single, you MUST look out for yourself, because no one else will, and you might as well look out for yourself really well.
Several of my friends read this book after I did. Based on its advice, one friend threw away all her worn out lingerie and started fresh. Another completely redecorated her house. Another started a financial savings plan. I began preparing much nicer meals for myself.
I don't think any of us has bought a bed jacket. But maybe you will, after reading this delightfully illustrated and charming book.

Gjet this book!

I'm cookbook-obsessive, and my stack from this season is literally over 2 feet high. I keep being disappointed by chef-driven books that use ridiculous ingredients in recipes that no normal person would do. Don't get me wrong, I love challenging and inspirational books, but quite frankly many of this genre of books is not inspirational because they aren't unique enough to warrant that title. But enough about the other books that I don't like.

I have never heard of Gjelina and so I have never eaten there (what's up with the crazy negative review - if you want every recipe, go get a job there). The narrative was interesting and entertaining. EVERY ingredient is accessible - there are a small handful of items that are seasonal or only going to found at your better markets, but in general, you'll be able to find the stuff or get a decent substitution. The recipes are doable and well-written for the average cook, but interesting enough for all levels to find exciting. And the photography is rich and lush. Lots and lots of recipes. A well done book!

One of the best cookbooks I own

This cookbook has absolutely blown me away. The photos are spectacular and the layout is thoughtful; almost all recipes occupy one page while the facing page is the corresponding photo, making the recipes simple to follow mid-cooking. The writing is concise and interesting, the recipes are explicit, there's a substantial range the flavors and dishes covered, and most importantly - the end results are amazing. [I've posted a list of the recipes at the end of my review.]

I have never been to Gjelina, nor had I even heard of it when I ordered the cookbook, but it seemed like the sort of food that I would enjoy - homemade pizza, pasta, roasted vegetables, delicious but not complicated desserts. I wasn't sure where to start, so this cookbook lay around my house for a while, but once I tried the chickpea kale stew, I was completely hooked. I cannot stop cooking dishes from this cookbook. Every recipe I have tried has been pure gold. Not fussy, not overly complicated, easy to source ingredients for, and incredibly enjoyable to eat. So far, I've made the chickpea stew (it works almost as nicely with canned chickpeas if you are feeling lazy), roasted cauliflower, charred Brussels sprouts with bacon, pomodoro sauce, pizza pomodoro, roasted chicken with braised kale, and the show-stopping chocolate tart.

I eat at Gjelina and Gjusta more often than I care to admit and have long anticipated the arrival of this book. My copy came on Tuesday and two days later I am serving the Chicken and Escarole Soup (page 231) to my family for dinner. Thank you to Travis who makes the most inspired veggie driven dishes in LA, and who generously shared all my favorite recipes in his book. Quality over Quantity

This is a thoughtful, modern approach that concisely guides students through traditional algorithms. The author does a great job of presenting and explaining each algorithm. This book does not have a lot of clutter that distracts from the important concepts. The information is carefully selected to help students focus on learning the crux of each algorithm and leaves the reference material to the internet, where it is abundant. This approach is preferable to other algorithm classes where students are burdened with huge algorithm text books while only using a small percentage of the pages in them.

The author makes a trade-off between keeping the text short (and readable) at the expense of not getting into the intricacies of implementation. It's an enjoyable read, and probably the only Algorithms book you can read cover to cover in one sitting. That being said, the book provides the material necessary in a graduate level algorithms course, and the exercises test you on your understanding of the text. It provides a great alternative to the overtly verbose algorithms books out there, without you feeling that you are missing out on knowledge.
