But by breaking part of Bastian’s curse, Rose has caught the attention of Cassandra, the enchantress who cursed him: and Cassandra is by no means ready to forgive and forget.

Meanwhile, wardens have been disappearing from the forest, one by one. Rose is certain that Cassandra is behind the disappearances, but can she and Bastian get to the bottom of the matter before Akiva disappears as well? And are Bastian’s motives entirely to be trusted?

Sometimes the little girl in the red hood doesn’t get eaten, and sometimes the wolf isn’t the most frightening thing in the forest.

A Brilliant Fantasy Read!

*I’m posting this as part of the XpressoBookTours Wolfskin Blog Tour. I recieved a free ebook copy of this in order to do so.
**I posted this on the 8th somewhere else, and now here as well.

Wolfskin is full of magic, witches, curses, power, action, romance, a cursed wolf, a bitter Enchantress, spells, growth, strength, trust, and bravery. It’s about a young girl seeking out adventure who becomes an apprentice to a witch, who ends up breaking the first part of a wolf’s curse, who learns spells and magic, and tries to figure out who is behind the missing Wardens and why they’re doing it. It’s about a fourteen year old girl maturing and growing into a young woman who finds love, friendship, and family. It’s about Rose’s adventures and the situations she gets into because of her naivety. It’s a tale you’ll surely love.

Characters:
*Rose is feisty, adventurous, and wants to be a Pirate so she never has to marry. She’s strong and brave but also young and naive. She’s a very believable character. She also tends to act without thinking. So watching her grow up, fight Cassandra, try to save Bastian from his curse, and try to solve the mystery of the missing Wardens was very satisfying and enjoyable.
*Bastian is probably my favorite. At first, he’s a conniving, vicious wolf who’s about to eat Rose on their first meeting. But when she breaks the first part of his curse he isn’t so bad. He’s a cursed man in the form of a wolf because of what he did, and he’s playful, protective, kind, thoughtful, and I loved reading about his interactions with Rose. Sure, at times he was slightly scary and his behavior was unsettling (mostly when the black surrounded the gold of his aura) but overall he was a character I really love.He’s also tortured and brooding, but he’s quick witted and definitely entertaining, especially when with Rose. Their banter never bored me and was very entertaining.
*Akiva is a Warden who took on Rose as an apprentice. She’s not your typical lovey, dovey, coddle-you woman. No. She’s a tough, no nonsense old lady with a hard fist and scolding eyes. She makes Rose work for everything and gets her to figure out things on her own since Akiva was never told anything whilst she was young; she had to figure it out herself.Akiva shows her emotions in odd ways, but once you get to know her it’s easy enough to tell when she’s happy, relieved, pleased and so on. She teaches Rose about magic and responsibility and she plays a major role in who Rose grows to be.

Pacing:
*To me, I feel the pacing was perfect. Though at times, with all the parties Rose went to because her sister, Gwendolen, is obsessed with them (basically), it was a little repetitive. it was great seeing Rose interact with Gilbert at those points, as well as Liz and Harry, but I feel like maybe we could go without the party? Things happened at the parties that really worked well with the story, which it needed, but I wasn’t that big of a fan reading about dancing and Gwen’s little minions and Rose just talking to Gil or being forced to dance. It was well written, but not something I myself loved.

Writing:
*It flowed well, kept me hooked, and allowed me to visualize everything fairly easily. The dialogue between characters never felt forced or unreal. It’s pretty much perfect.
*I love how Bastian and Rose didn’t fall in love right away, as most stories would’ve played out. It helps that Rose was still a young girl when they meet, and that she treats him as more of a friend while Bastian tries to woo her for his own gain. But I love how gradual it is and how it’s not only for her, but him too.

World-Building:
*Everything was easy enough to visualize and was incredibly well written. I feel like the world was flushed out well and I very much enjoyed talk of the forest because it was easy to see how much it means to the characters and why. It was like the forest was pulsing with it’s own life and that it felt emotions, which is great because the author really let all of it come through the writing.
*I like how each Warden had a specific piece of the forest to claim as their own and care for. It really allowed you to understand the forest more because Wardens have to make sure the land is happy and healthy and the forest tens to act out or try to fight back when dying and uncared for.
*The laws of the forest really made it feel so much more real. And we really get to explore the forest more since Rose loves adventure and tends to slip away from the path. We learn of what lives in the forest (somewhat) and why the forest allows them to do certain things. We learn of the forest’s magic and how much life it really holds.
*The magic was fantastic. The gradual growth of Rose’s powers really helped us try to understand her magic. I like how she wasn’t instantly powerful, or holding this epic power just waiting to burst. I enjoyed reading as she tried day after day after day to see the forest lines without closing her eyes. It made everything feel more real because she had to work hard to get to where she wanted to be.

Overall, I loved reading Wolfskin and I recommend this to everyone. Especially if you love to read about witches, wolves, magic, and fantasy.

Completely Wowed me!

I thought something so different when I first read the synopsis, but I loved this book. LOL I like that, when things go better than expectations. This is the story of a girl, who apprentices with a witch, who isn't something extra special outright, but because she works hard, cares for others, and her surrounding, she becomes great. She does great things. And in the process, she finds herself, her home, and someone to share it with. Seriously, good story!!

Rose is 14 years old at the start of the book. She's the older, not so pretty, tomboy who would rather climb trees, hunt, be dirty, than be pretty, learn to cook and think of marriage. Actually, she is so dead set against marriage that she says she'll become a pirate so she doesn't have to marry. HA! I loved her. She is hilarious, she gets mad at herself but never gives up. She worries about the land where she lives, her family, the animals in the forest. And of course, the wolf with a curse who can talk. She is sent to her mom's friend, who is the witch to learn. She wanted so bad to see magic, that she forgot to pay attention where the magic was really happening. Until it's thrown into her face, because of that wolf. Bastian. He's something. So she becomes Little Red Riding Hood. Except her hood isn't red, and the wolf no longer wants to eat her, but to use her to break his curse. And his cursor is really mad that she is actually breaking parts of his curse, so she now has another witch after her and all she wants is to learn.

The characters are so much a big part of this story. I loved Bastian. Just wait, you will too. I really liked Gilbert, and I felt bad for him, but I won't tell you why. Her sister Gwen is funny, because she's so oblivious to anything other than herself, being pretty because boys fall at her feet for it. Her mom is awesome. And my favorite character is Akiva, the witch. I thought she was fantastic. She teaches Rose so much more than magic. And I thought it was hilarious how she taught her. And the plot in the back ground of the curse and the other witches going missing made it so much more. Mystery, action, suspense as well as light hearted fun and antics and little self discoveries.

The writing is well done. There's a great deal of realization that was put into descriptions that made me feel like I really was in that time. Before... I loved the concept of the big bad wolf. But not really. I enjoyed seeing three years of Rose's life change her, watch her grow, and see how she affected more people around her than she ever imaged she would. I would love to see more, though this is a stand alone. It was a beautiful story, and like always, when I love something, I want more. It worked out so well though. Everything turned out magnificent. So with that said, 5 MAGICAL PAWS!!

A Red Riding Hood romance

I love W.R. Gingell, and I am convinced that she can do no wrong. After reading her book, Masque, I jumped at the chance to join her book blog tour for Wolfskin, an impressive retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. I was not disappointed in the least. This book was full of magic, mystery, delightful three-dimensional, characters, romance and a dark curse only Rose is capable of breaking.

The world building in this book was nothing short of remarkable. I was completely enamored with the laws that governed the forest, its magic and those wardens in charge of their specific piece of that forest. The gradual growth of Rose's powers coupled with her inquisitive nature and adventurous spirit made for an exciting read with a heroine truly exceptional in every way.

Bastian is nothing short of swoon worthy. So tortured, brooding, wickedly engaging and quick witted to boot. The banter between him and Rose is so entertaining, and I think part of what makes it wonderful is how very atypical the dynamics of their relationship are. Generally, the heroine and hero fall in love with one another almost immediately in fairy tales such as these, but Rose is still a young girl when she meets Bastian, and she treats him like he is more of an annoying uncle while Bastian must do his best to woo someone out of desperation rather than true regard.

Their relationship eventually grows and develops into something quite beautiful, and the weaknesses that plague them are soon strengths that serve to define them in the end.

The writing was clever, the pacing was perfect, and the author's vivid imagination and attention to detail took me on an exciting adventure that proved to be one of the best Red Riding Hood retellings I have ever read. Please follow this author and read everything she comes out with. It will be the most helpful advice I could ever give you. That and eating chocolate at the same time.

Provides excellent context for current political environment

I have a technical background, but have an interest in history. I found this book much more interesting and understandable than I expected. The book presents the thoughts and arguments of the best Western thinkers of the past 2,500 years. The author first sets each thinker in their historical context, then goes into their major thoughts and conclusions. What made this book rewarding for me is the realization that all modern political questions and arguments have been well thought out with great subtlety over the ages. The consensus agreements have changed greatly, but the questions are not new.

This book has greatly changed my perspective on "current events" in world politics. There are no simple answers in the book, but now I have a fantastic context in which to think about the day to day world politics.

Sublime and Profound!

Other reviewers and numerous magazines and newspapers have given this book the excellent review it deserves. As such, I cannot do much more justice to it in my own review, but would like to touch upon some of the best aspects of this book.

There are some other books that are summaries on Political Thought but none are as good as this one. This book is really a dialogue between the author and the ideas of the thinkers presented within in a considered, nuanced,and subtle fashion. The author speculates on the merits and drawbacks of each of the ideas contained in the book without coming off as too strong or without seeming as though he is propagating one particular world view. The book has a unity to it that would not be possible if it were simply a collection of essays by different authors or even the same author; in short, it is held together by the question, which the author refers to again and again on what is the best way for people to organize themselves politically. Thankfully, the book is not teleological either, which allows various ideas to be considered in and of themselves instead of as points on the way to the present. In short, the book is not polemic. Nor is it overly esoteric (some thinkers such as Leo Strauss have a much more esoteric take on political thought), since it deals with the political organization of humanity, a topic that involves application in the form of practical and organizational questions, though these often derive from theory. In fact, it is interested to see two strands of political thinking highlighted in this book and their interplay with each other- one which derives specifics from a pre-conceived theory (Plato, Hobbes, Marx) and one which sets up some general maxims on the basis of observation (Machiavelli, Montesquieu, Tocqueville).

This book really contains two volumes. I found some aspects of each of these volumes more interesting than others. The first volume includes the expected- that is, Plato and Aristotle among some other Classical and Medieval thinkers. I would assume that most readers such as myself would have some knowledge of Plato and Aristotle and as such I personally found the sections of Medieval thought to be most interesting because, other than Augustine and Aquinas, much of it was new to me. The second volume was where the author truly shines. Many of the questions and issues posed by thinkers in the period between 1500-1900 are relevant to the present and were instrumental in thinking about how the modern state and political order have developed. I especially enjoyed his sections on Hobbes, counterrevolutionary thinkers (Burke for example), Tocqueville, Mill, Hegel (who is often not discussed through the lens of political theory), and 20th century anxieties and reactions to modernity and social trends. (I wish the author also included some more thinkers in their own chapters instead of talking about them through other chapters; for example, Hume and Kant but as the author himself notes, when undertaking such a large project, it is inevitable that one has to be selective. There is enough food for thought for the seriously thinker to do further research on his/her own).

Finally, this book contains some other strengths. The Economist has put them better than me, so I will quote it a couple of times in order to point out the things that make this book worth buying (copyrighted by the Economist and I claim no authorship):

(1) "Mr Ryan has devoted his life to studying political ideas...and he reminds us that politics is about fundamental philosophical issues rather than just horrible hacks calling each other poopy-heads. How can people run their collective affairs without sacrificing individual rights to collective order? What is the basis of the state's authority over its citizens? Should that authority be absolute or limited by constitutional checks and individual rights?"

(2) "It is also important that, as Mr Ryan puts it, "long-dead writers often speak to us with greater freshness and immediacy than our contemporaries." James Madison has the best advice for Egyptian liberals who want to prevent Muhammad Morsi from turning democracy into dictatorship. John Stuart Mill...has the best arguments against Michael Bloomberg and the "soft despotism" entailed in his soft-drink regulations...Mr Ryan's historical approach helps us at the very least to look at our problems from new angles, and at best to harness the help of history's sharpest minds in producing policies."

(3) "Mr Ryan's approach to political theory is thoroughly old-fashioned--and all the better for it. In recent years historians and political theorists have been busily undermining the Western canon--dissolving the great political theorists in their wider intellectual contexts or discovering seminal thinkers in the rest of the world...Mr Ryan is happy to put the greatness back in. He treats Hobbes and company as thinkers to be grappled with rather than historical figures to be contextualised."

These three quotes demonstrate why this book is such a pleasure to read, because it is deep and thoughtful yet immediate. This is a great book to have as a reference and a reminder especially when one cannot always go back and reread, say, Plato or Hobbes on a daily basis. My background does include Political Theory and I have read most of the thinkers in this book (in college before I got this book) but personally I think this book captures the essence of political thinking in a very informative and readable way. Furthermore, I believe a book like this is useful in providing unity and structure to the cannon of thinkers which if read individually could come across as disparate unless one has a volume such as this and/or a good knowledge of history, especially Western history. Finally,if a person does not have the chance or interest in reading the original works of the thinkers, then this book is a good alternative. This book represents a tradition of Western political thought that reached its highest form in the West over the past 500 years so one should not expect to find much non-Western thought in it, which is fine, since Western political thought evolved in its own manner in conversation among its various texts and thinkers while other civilizations's intellectual thought evolved in their own largely independent ways until recently. To summarize, this is perhaps one of the best books I have ever read, so I recommend it highly.

This is a superb book, engaging and beautifully written. A delight. Few philosophers have the breadth and depth of understanding to make sense of the long history of political philosophy. Alan Ryan is exceptional in combining authority, a light touch, and a contagious enthusiasm for his subject. Highly recommended.

I used this book and had to take the GRE in one month. I needed a refresher since I had not taken a test in over 10 years. With somewhat minimal studying I was able to increase my test scores 7 points on the quantitative and 4 on the verbal. I highly recommend taking the online quizzes and reviewing the answers immediately - That is what worked best for me.

Don't be fooled by the online/mobile availability!

It talks about an online/mobile subscription yet I am unable to access it on my phone. Every time I try and answer a question I am told that I must purchase the book, which I already have!

By the time she reached her late twenties, Eudora Welty (1909-2001) was launching a distinguished literary career. She was also becoming a capable gardener under the tutelage of her mother, Chestina Welty, who designed their modest garden in Jackson, Mississippi. From the beginning, Eudora wove images of southern flora and gardens into her writing, yet few outside her personal circle knew that the images were drawn directly from her passionate connection to and abiding knowledge of her own garden.

Near the end of her life, Welty still resided in her parents’ house, but the garden-and the friends who remembered it-had all but vanished. When a local garden designer offered to help bring it back, Welty began remembering the flowers that had grown in what she called “my mother’s garden.” By the time Eudora died, that gardener, Susan Haltom, was leading a historic restoration. When Welty’s private papers were released several years after her death, they confirmed that the writer had sought both inspiration and a creative outlet there. This book contains many previously unpublished writings, including literary passages and excerpts from Welty’s private correspondence about the garden.

The authors of One Writer’s Garden also draw connections between Welty’s gardening and her writing. They show how the garden echoed the prevailing style of Welty’s mother’s generation, which in turn mirrored wider trends in American life: Progressive-era optimism, a rising middle class, prosperity, new technology, women’s clubs, garden clubs, streetcar suburbs, civic beautification, conservation, plant introductions, and garden writing. The authors illustrate this garden’s history―and the broader story of how American gardens evolved in the early twentieth century-with images from contemporary garden literature, seed catalogs, and advertisements, as well as unique historic photographs. Noted landscape photographer Langdon Clay captures the restored garden through the seasons.

About the Author
Susan Haltom, Ridgeland, Mississippi, is a garden designer and preservation and maintenance coordinator of the Eudora Welty garden. She has published in Mississippi Magazine, Mississippi Gardens, Old House Journal, and Magnolia, the journal of the Southern Garden History Society.

Jane Roy Brown, Conway, Massachusetts, is a freelance travel and garden writer with a focus on historic gardens and landscapes. She is also director of educational outreach for the Library of American Landscape History. She has published in Horticulture, Preservation, Garden Design, and the Boston Globe, and she serves as a contributing editor to Landscape Architecture.

Langdon Clay’s photographs have been featured in such publications as Jefferson’s Monticello by Howard Adams and From My Chateau Kitchen by Anne Willan. His art photography can be found in museums in Paris, London, New York, Chicago, New Orleans, and Jackson, Mississippi.

Beautiful photos, interesting angle on history

Eudora Welty grew up in an era when gardens were taken seriously, seen as an escape from the increasingly busy world and thought to prevent nervous breakdowns, so it's not surprising that both Welty's fiction and letters are full of references to flowers. This gorgeous book is packed with color photographs of the garden Welty helped restore before her death in 2001, a garden that had originally been tended by her mother, but flowers are not the sole focus of One Writer's Garden. While tracing the role of gardening in the lives of Welty and her mother authors Haltom and Brown also deliver an interesting angle on the social history of the early 1900's. Women's garden clubs were flourishing then with greenery seen as the cure for all of society's ills. Even during the height of the depression garden clubs were still multiplying and their members were busy planting trees along city streets and flowers in gas stations. One Writer's Garden is full of fascinating anecdotes of a time when magenta was not well thought of because, being the color of arsenic used in pesticides, it represented pollution in the minds of the purist gardening club women. Planting magenta flowers was actively discouraged then, and Eudora Welty's mother preferred to avoid walking down streets with that color in its gardens.

Beautifully written and illustrated!

This is a fascinating history, well illustrated with historic photos as well as images of the garden in its current, beautiful state. This volume deserves a place alongside "The Orchard: A Memoir" by Theresa Weir, on any bookshelf! The best garden book I have read in a long, long time.

A coffee table book that deserves to be read

This is a beautiful book,on fine paper with elegant typography and stunning color photographs, but it is more than a garden book and more than a coffee table book. It deserves to be read. The writing is as crisp and elegant as the book's design, and it is packed with interesting and often humorous detail about Eudora Welty's life and times, about gardening in the South in the early twentieth century, and about the influence of gardening on Welty's works. This would be a great present for anyone who loves the writings of Eudora Welty or who enjoys gardening. (Treat yourself, too.)

A great book, but not as advertised.

Unlike what the editorial review states, this book is not about 2 young men from New York. Rather, this is the Spanish translation of The Outsiders, S.E. Hinton's first and most popular book. It's about 3 teenagers and their gang from the wrong side of the tracks in 1960s Tulsa, Okla. It's a great book about friendship and growing up and I would encourage anyone to read it. If you can read the English edition, do - it flows a lot better and is more realistic.

The impact that this book had on me was amazing. I have read this book 54 times since I was 10. I just felt so connected to it. I would (and do)recomend it to every one I know. Adult and child!
