About the Author
A sub who’s about to lose it all… Dakota is a simple Midwest girl, who has found her passion in storytelling at a young age. Her father always said she made up the craziest stories. Most remained unwritten though as writing wasn’t Dakota’s strong suit. That all changed in junior high when she took her first typing class. Problem solved for the dyslexic Dakota. There was no stopping her after that. She wrote her first novel her freshman year about a girl who could speak to animals on an old electric IBM typewriter her dad found at a garage sale. Now writing in several different genres, she is a published author with multiple books under her belt. When she isn’t writing, she’s the crazy mom of three wild Indians who are posing as her children.

Best BDSM book ever!
By Sheila73
This book!!! I won an ARC from the author in a FB contest that I had entered because the teasers were so hot they left me panting for more. I was NOT disappointed!
Bethany and Deacon have been 'best buds' ever since high school. She has always secretly loved him, but is aware that he isn't the kind to settle down and have a family, which is what Bethany wants in her life. It takes only one moment to change the whole dynamic of their relationship- Bethany walks into Deacon's office and finds him enacting a 'scene' with a sub. He has the girl bent over his desk doing all sorts of delicious things to her before. Instead of feeling disgust at the sight, Bethany is immediately fired up and crazy with desire. She can't help but stand there a few moments and watch, long enough for Deacon to see the look in her eyes and realize what that look meant. It meant she wanted this for herself...and Deacon is more than happy to give it to her.
Getting Bethany to admit her needs is a different story. She doesn't want to risk their friendship by entering into a sexual relationship, especially of a D/s kind. Deacon proposes a bet: if he wins, she has to agree to be his sub for seven days of vacation, if she wins he'll agree to let the whole matter drop.
He wins the bet, just like he was confident he would. For Deacon, it's about more than just seven days of sexual bliss. He's determined to prove to her that they could have a more permanent D/s relationship even back home in the real world.
The problem is that Bethany is just as determined not to lose her friend or allow her heart to be broken. Her heart has a mind of its own however and she finds herself falling for him. Deacon also realizes he's feeling things he's never before felt for any previous subs...Bethany isn't an ordinary sub though, she's his best friend. Neither one wants to share their true feelings with the other, and they aren't real sure how to deal with what's happening between them.
I won't reveal anything that happens after the seven days, except what you can read in the book description- Bethany finds out she's pregnant. This causes a whole hell of a mess that threatens not only their relationship as lovers, but their lifelong friendship as well. Things are said and done that shouldn't have been, and they're both faced with realities that are hard to accept. The story line that follows is an emotional roller coaster for the reader as well as the characters! Be prepared to want to cry and be angry, but rest assured there is an HEA for Bethany and Dean.
I wanted to read this book because of the sexy as hell teasers, and there were definitely MANY panty-wetting moments. more than I could keep track of! I started highlighting them until I realized I was highlighting most of the book! What surprised me was the emotional complexity the author brought to the characters. What I thought was going to be a book about sex ended up being a book about friendship and trust, and what happens when those feelings expand into the realm of an intense and all-consuming love.
So you can read it for the awesome BDSM action, but I think you'll find you receive way more than a pair of wet panties from it!

Enjoyable
By jennifer schultheis
I thoroughly enjoyed Safeword Interrupted by Dakota Trace. In this story we have a friends to lovers romance, which will keep you entertained, while you eagerly turn the pages to see what's going to happen next. Deacon is a Dom but his best friend Bethany has no clue. Well she doesn't stay clueless for long, in fact she gets an eye full of him when she storms his office one day. That moment changes everything between them and even though Bethany tries to deny her urges, Deacon knows better. There is way more to this story, but you need to experience this story for yourself. Definitely a must read!!

Emotional Upheaval
By Evelise @ S.E.X. Reviews
Safeword Interrupted was a well-written and developed friends to lovers drama in only the style and fashion deliverable by Dakota Trace. Deacon and Bethany have been friends and co-workers for ages. Upon losing a bet, Bethany agrees to enter a temporary D/s relationship with Deacon. Intrigued by what she saw in his office and with the yearnings she now feels, Bethany has little choice but to allow the fantasy to play out. For Bethany though, the fantasy becomes all too real as her feelings for Deacon flourish and unbeknownst to her, the playboy Dominant has taken his role in her life very seriously and to the next level.

As always, Ms. Trace elicited a myriad of emotions from this reader as I forged ahead through the book. If truth be known, Deacon was not my favorite character and I lamented over my inclination to despise him. His arrogance and self-indulgence left me seething with a desire for Bethany to toss him aside. But, patience being a virtue and Ms. Trace being aptly talented, my heart soon opened to Deacon and his misgivings—much of which stemmed from his childhood—Deacon soon won me over as a man of his word and a dominant.

Bethany’s characterization was a strong woman who fought for what she believed to be right and in the best interest of herself, her unborn child and even Deacon.

Together the two characters waded through the trials and tribulations of beginning a D/s relationship and Bethany’s reluctance to step into the lifestyle. Dakota Trace never leaves a stone unturned in her research of a topic and her mastery of transferring emotions from character to reader is flawless.
Kudos Dakota!

Review
If you're a dedicated Doc Watson fan, I think you would find this book an interesting read. It does get into some darker areas of Doc's life, such as Merle's death, but it also is a celebration of the man through the eyes and ears of those who know him. --Steve Carr, docsguitars.com

Hard to believe it's been 50 years since Ralph Rinzler first introduced guitarist Doc Watson to the larger world. It's a fitting anniversary for the first book-length biography on Doc to appear. It was long overdue. This is a valuable, anecdotal work anyone interested in Doc's music and life will enjoy reading. --Bluegrass Unlimited

This is a highly informative, fascinating biography of the great Doc Watson. What a life. It's a page-turner that will keep you up past your bedtime. Don't miss it. -- The Inland Northwest Bluegrass Association

Once you start, it's awful hard to put down!
By Paul D. Asbell
When I received this book in the mail, I knew that I wanted to read the whole thing. But I had an awfully busy day planned. Once I got started reading, however, it became obvious that a lot of stuff was gonna get procrastinated 'til next day. At 2AM, I was done... but a lot of lingering emotions from this fascinating, incredibly deeply researched look keep resonating... and will for a long time.

Kent's book is an extremely moving and revealing look at one of the most fascinating and influential pickers in American folklore. Most folks who know anything about American roots music know Doc's name, and many of these folks know a good deal about Doc's remarkable musical career over the last 45+ years. But very, very few people know the man and his astonishing story in the detail that this book provides.

It's a quintessentially American story, and I'm extraordinarily grateful to Kent for providing us with it!

A Landmark Biography
By Paul Chasman
In "Blind But Now I See," Kent Gustafson has written a landmark biography of Doc Watson, one of the most important figures in 20th century American folk music. Drawing from interviews of over fifty luminaries such as Mike Seeger, Jack Lawrence, and Maria Muldaur, the author paints a vivid portrait of Doc Watson, the man and his roots, his career, his virtuosic musicianship, his complex relationship with his son Merle, and his inestimable influence on generations of musicians.

For me, as a lifelong fan and early student of Doc Watson's music, "Blind But Now I See" offers many revelations, but two stand out: The first is Ralph Rintzler's role in Doc's early career. I knew the stories about Rintzler "discovering" Doc and persuading him to put down his electric guitar, but I had no idea how instrumental he was in shaping Doc's image and repertoire. I now understand that Rintzler was the man who, in many ways, created the persona that I myself bought into when I was a kid in the 60s. Not that Doc wasn't all the things he presented, he was just a whole lot more which Rintzler insisted he keep under wraps.

The other revelation for me was Doc's son Merle who accompanied him for nearly twenty years and died an untimely death. The Merle I knew sat silently on stage while his dad shined in the spotlight. However, the book shows us Merle as Doc's businessman; his driver, navigator, and guide; his liaison to the younger generation; Merle as Doc's eyes and best friend. Almost unanimously, those who knew him spoke of him as a sweet, gentle and generous soul. Merle was talented, intelligent, savvy, and in the end a tragic figure who possibly carried more of a burden than he could bear.

Kent Gustafson has written a biography that is insightful and revealing. "Blind But Now I See," gives us Doc Watson the human being: a simple yet complex man who has lived a life of tragedy and triumph.

A Great Book About Doc
By M. Spicher Schonberg
Did you know that Doc Watson's father made Doc's first banjo from the hide of his grandma's 16 year-old cat? Did you know that Doc Watson can tell you how many fenceposts he's passed just by the echo of the rustling grass as he walks through it?

Doc Watson's music touches me deeply. It is a genuine and integral expression of his life and who he is. This anecdotal biography helps me to appreciate Doc's music a lot more. These fascinating stories describe a life lived with integrity, honesty, grit and love. Though these stories are spun as simply as a pair of homemade pants, when taken together, they resound with a harmony and beauty as rich as any of Doc's best gospel tracks.

American music is a complex organism. The mixture of genres and cultures evades our best efforts to form comprehensible little catagories. Doc Watson is a crossroads. His extraordinary breadth of exposure to and mastery of so many genres and traditions allows us to catch a glimpse of the big picture of American music. This exhaustively researched book, therefore, is not just the story of one Appalachian man, but a well-crafted lens through which we can see and better appreciate our musical heritage.

Great tips
By noreen
My teen daughter loves drawing fashion ever since she took a class at her Jr. High. This book as so many tips and techniques. It shows so many different figures to draw clothes on including children. It also shows techniques for different types of materials too. She has used this book daily since it arrived, including taking it on vacation to the beach. This is a book I see her using for a long time. She looked at many books and this is the one she ultimately picked and adores.

On Justification: Economies of Worth (Princeton Studies in Cultural Sociology), by Luc Boltanski, Laurent Thévenot

A vital and underappreciated dimension of social interaction is the way individuals justify their actions to others, instinctively drawing on their experience to appeal to principles they hope will command respect. Individuals, however, often misread situations, and many disagreements can be explained by people appealing, knowingly and unknowingly, to different principles. On Justification is the first English translation of Luc Boltanski and Laurent Thévenot's ambitious theoretical examination of these phenomena, a book that has already had a huge impact on French sociology and is likely to have a similar influence in the English-speaking world.

In this foundational work of post-Bourdieu sociology, the authors examine a wide range of situations where people justify their actions. The authors argue that justifications fall into six main logics exemplified by six authors: civic (Rousseau), market (Adam Smith), industrial (Saint-Simon), domestic (Bossuet), inspiration (Augustine), and fame (Hobbes). The authors show how these justifications conflict, as people compete to legitimize their views of a situation.

On Justification is likely to spark important debates across the social sciences.

From the Back Cover

"Boltanski and Thévenot's On Justification is one of the most important contributions to the field of economic sociology in the past decade. It does not fit neatly into any of the major theoretical perspectives that currently dominate the field--institutionalism, organizational ecology, network analysis, rational choice, or transaction-cost economics. But precisely because it is so original, it has great potential to chart new territory and enliven debates. The book has already had an enormous impact in France, where it is one of the founding documents of the 'economics of conventions' school. It is sure to have a big impact in sociology in the United States and Britain too. I could list at least twenty major sociologists who have asked me when the book will be translated."--David Stark, Columbia University

On justifying On Justification
By Robert G. Lingard
On Justification is not, by any means, an easy read. It is a very theoretical work, going into great depth to explain assumptions and rationales (but all of this leads to very practical and worthwhile outcomes.)

However, if you can persist with it (or if this is your thing?!?) then you will doubtless find it a well researched and presented work on how people think and act.

Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls, by Mary Downing Hahn

Based on an actual crime in 1955, this YA novel is at once a mystery and a coming-of-age story. The brutal murder of two teenage girls on the last day of Nora Cunningham’s junior year in high school throws Nora into turmoil. Her certainties—friendships, religion, her prudence, her resolve to find a boyfriend taller than she is—are shaken or cast off altogether. Most people in Elmgrove, Maryland, share the comforting conviction that Buddy Novak, who had every reason to want his ex-girlfriend dead, is responsible for the killings. Nora agrees at first, then begins to doubt Buddy’s guilt, and finally comes to believe him innocent—the lone dissenting voice in Elmgrove. Told from several different perspectives, including that of the murderer, Mister Death’s Blue-Eyed Girls is a suspenseful page-turner with a powerful human drama at its core.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-Nora Cunningham's world turns upside down when two of her teenage girlfriends are killed. Buddy Novak, the ex-boyfriend of one of the girls, is the prime suspect, and Nora and the rest of the town believe that he is guilty. As she learns more, however, she starts to doubt that he was involved. Nora also faces her own tribulations in her small town of Elmgrove, Maryland. She once was so sure of her life, but now she questions who she is and what she wants. Hahn's novel (Clarion, 2012), set in 1955, is a combination of a mystery and a coming-of-age story and is based on an actual crime that the author lived through as a teenager. It is told through alternating points of view between Nora and the individual responsible for the crimes. The narration immediately sets the mood with Nick Podehl's dark, hushed tones that sound manic and even scary at times. A definite purchase for those looking to add quality fiction to their audiobook collections.-Katie Llera, Bound Brook High School, NJα(c) Copyright 2013. From the Author
This is the most difficult book I've ever written, mainly because it is based loosely on my own experiences as a teenager. Writing it brought back memories as intense as the day they happened. When I sat down at the computer, I traveled straight back into the past. I remembered the words of songs I'd never really forgotten, poetry and books and movies, the clothes we wore, the things we talked about -- and thought about, my feelings of inadequacy and insecurity, my increasing religious doubts, my uneasy relationship with my mother, and so on. Since it is unlike my other books, I challenged myself  to experiment by using the present tense and employing multiple points of view-- very liberating. When I finally finished the book, I was very nervous about its reception. Would kids read it thinking it was a typical middle school ghost story? Would some be offended by Nora's leaving the Church? Or by her curiosity about sex? Or the smoking and drinking? Would people who remembered the murders be upset by my factionalized treatment of the events set in motion that June morning in 1955? Well, I told myself, we write the stories we have to write. And this is the best book I've ever written. At least I think so.

Review from Esther's Ever After
By Brenna
Confession: I've had a longtime obsession with crime stories. I blame my family (and too much old A&E TV shows as a child, and maybe a few too many years of CSI more recently) for this. I'm fascinated by it. I'm horrified and disturbed at times. But there's nothing scarier than some of these real life stories.

Needless to say, Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls caught my eye for exactly this reason. And I think it was also because of this that led to my unfortunate disappointment with the book as a whole. It really wasn't the crime story I was hoping for, not at all.

Reasons to Read:

1.A coming of age story:

I might have liked this book more if I had had a better idea that I was supposed to expect a coming of age story rather than a crime story. And it's a fascinating look at one turn of events that tragically impacted a large number of people. But our narrator, Nora, finds this stage of her life to be almost completely defined by this murder - it really does end up triggering a number of life changing decisions and realizations for her.

2.The setting: 1950s small town:

I absolutely loved the vintage feel of the book - from the pop culture, the little bits of fashion talked about, the ideas, the struggles, the societal changes, etc. It was fascinating for me to read about and a time period that YA doesn't typically feature.
The real problem with this book for me though was that it didn't feel like fiction. Instead, it felt more like a memoir which makes sense if you read the Acknowledgements of the book, where Mary talks about how this book was inspired by an event which actually happened to her as a teenager. And she lays out the truth of what happened - which is actually VERY, extremely close to what happens in the book. So rather than feeling like fiction, Mister Death read to me like (a biased) account of Mary's experiences with the murder of two teen girls she knew.

And normally this wouldn't be an issue. Except for when it comes to who the killer is - Nora has doubts that the ex-boyfriend, Buddy, killed the girls even though the entire town believes it was him. Mary explains how she has the same doubts, so this read to me (without seeing any real evidence of who committed the murders) as if this book was supposed to portray (what she believes to be) what ACTUALLY happened, even if no one believes it. Then the book was labelled as "fiction" in case anyone was upset by the message.

I'm not a fan of this. But regardless, I still felt like much of the book revolved around external experiences rather than the murder itself, which is why I wanted to warn you that it really isn't a crime story. After the murders occur, the story breaks off to Nora's life. About her relationship with boys, about her doubts regarding her faith, and growing up and losing friends. But I had a difficult time piecing it all together, and along with the numerous other points of view (there were 8 in total, I believe, including Nora's) made the story feel far too convoluted for me.

Review copy received from Thomas Allen & Son Ltd for my honest review; no other compensation was received.

A Gem Of A Book
By April
Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls by Mary Downing Han' is a well-written historical fiction YA novel about the murder of two girls which shakes a small town in the 1950s. Nora, the main character, is at the heart of Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls'. Nora is friends with the victims, Cheryl and Bobbi-Jo and hangs out with them the night before their murders. The deaths of the two girls come as a shock to Nora. Much of Elmgrove, the Baltimore suburb in which this book is set, believes Cheryl's ex, a ne'er do well named Buddy was the killer, but Nora has her doubts, which the book explores.

The structure of Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls' is quite interesting. The book is divided into alternate point of view chapters with letters as well as diary entries. Further, we also get the point of view of the killer which is incredibly creepy. The narrative structure lends itself quite well to exploring themes of tragedy and growing up.

Tragedy changes Elmgrove. The residents' sense of safety is shaken. Those close to it experience deep hurt and pain, as is typical to the grieving process. Yet, we also get to see Nora's reactions to those who sensationalize the tragedy, those who are kind to her because they want the lurid details. Mary Downing Hahn' does a fair job portraying the very real emotions and different faces that tragedy can wear.

Perhaps the best part of Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls' is the dynamism of Nora as a character. She starts out as quite an immature young girl, with her biggest worry being if the popular jock notices her or not. Then we see Nora deeply questioning different aspects of her life as an outcome of the murders. Nora does question her faith as well, but in a respectful manner. I think that a lot of teenagers will be able to identify with Nora's turning points and with her questioning, even if tragedy has not struck their lives.

In all, Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls by Mary Downing Hahn 'is a book that stands out. It is fast-paced, engaging and thought-provoking. While Mister Death's Blue Eyed Girls' may not have the fanfare of bigger YA releases, it is a gem of a book that I absolutely would recommend for readers who enjoy true crime as well as historical fiction.

Unassuming solid read
By sanoe.net
Mary Downing Hahn's "Mister Death's Blue-Eyed Girls" is based on a real life event in the author's life. The time period is when she was a teenager in the mid-50s.

I am really grateful that Ms Hahn remained in that time period rather than trying to 'modernize' it to the current time period because the 50s, with its unique anachronisms and cultural habits, give the story of a murder and suspicion that extra tension.

An example is the difference between watching Robert Mitchum's "Cape Fear" and the Robert DeNiro's "Cape Fear." The way of living in the 50s is different from this modern era and Hahn, having grown up in that era, translates it accurately and in an unassuming way.

Her lead character, Nora, is full of youthful dreams and vigor. She's well aware of her flaws but not obsessed with them. She's moving along in life with normal anxieties about the family car being too old and worn or daydreaming about her crush who'll never look twice at her.

But when an event disrupts her town, it disrupts her life as well as she is closer than most.

Hahn writes in an unpretentious but precise way. The reader feels the change in tone as the situation gets tighter. It almost plays like an old Hitchcock film but YA style.

The great and honest thing is that Hahn offers no easy out at the end because in true, old fashioned YA style (think "The Chocolate War"), life isn't always easy and what should happen doesn't always happen.

Suffice it to say, I enjoyed reading this book. The ambience of the 50s, the tension of suspicion, the loss of innocence, it all played out solidly in this gem of a novel.

Soul by Soul: Life Inside the Antebellum Slave Market, by Walter Johnson

Soul by Soul tells the story of slavery in antebellum America by moving away from the cotton plantations and into the slave market itself, the heart of the domestic slave trade. Taking us inside the New Orleans slave market, the largest in the nation, where 100,000 men, women, and children were packaged, priced, and sold, Walter Johnson transforms the statistics of this chilling trade into the human drama of traders, buyers, and slaves, negotiating sales that would alter the life of each. What emerges is not only the brutal economics of trading but the vast and surprising interdependencies among the actors involved. Using recently discovered court records, slaveholders’ letters, nineteenth-century narratives of former slaves, and the financial documentation of the trade itself, Johnson reveals the tenuous shifts of power that occurred in the market’s slave coffles and showrooms. Traders packaged their slaves by “feeding them up,” dressing them well, and oiling their bodies, but they ultimately relied on the slaves to play their part as valuable commodities. Slave buyers stripped the slaves and questioned their pasts, seeking more honest answers than they could get from the traders. In turn, these examinations provided information that the slaves could utilize, sometimes even shaping a sale to their own advantage. Johnson depicts the subtle interrelation of capitalism, paternalism, class consciousness, racism, and resistance in the slave market, to help us understand the centrality of the “peculiar institution“ in the lives of slaves and slaveholders alike. His pioneering history is in no small measure the story of antebellum slavery.

From Publishers Weekly
Instead of focusing on cotton plantations or broad historical patterns, this extraordinary study is a flesh-and-blood daily history of the slave market. NYU history professor Johnson takes readers inside the Dixie slave pens and traders' coffles (long rows of slaves manacled and chained to one another). His focus is New Orleans, North America's largest slave market, hub of a trade that decimated African-American slave communities by tearing families asunder--destroying marriages and separating children from parents. Using former slave survivors' narratives, letters written by slaveholders, docket records of cases of disputed slave sales and Southern medical and agricultural journals, Johnson interweaves the voices of traders, buyers, auctioneers and the slaves themselves. He shows that, for white Southern slaveholders, buying slaves buoyed a fantasy of manly bourgeois self-control, speculative savvy and economic independence. Slaves, meanwhile, assessed the character of particular buyers and sometimes, at enormous risk, manipulated a sale to their own advantage. The evil business of slavery has seldom been exposed with so much humanity and insight as in this eloquent study, scholarly yet wholly accessible, a compelling cross-sectional microcosm of millions of human tragedies. From Library Journal
In his first book, Johnson (history, New York Univ.) provides the fullest, most penetrating examination of the antebellum slave market to date. Using slave narratives, court records, planters' letters, and more, Johnson enters the slave pens and showrooms of the New Orleans slave market to observe how slavery turned men and women into merchandise and how slaves resisted such efforts to steal their humanity. He tracks the slaves from their march to the market to the terrifying moments of sale and adaptation to new masters, places, and work. Johnson's original, important, and brilliantly presented book makes a case for the slave market as "best place to see slavery." It was there that self-interest, concepts of race, and the slave "community" came together to reveal how white men traded their own souls for a stake in human property. An essential book for anyone who wants to understand why slavery matters.ARandall M. Miller, St. Joseph's Univ., Philadelphia

From Booklist
The rejuvenation of U.S. slavery from the 1820s onward due to the South's cotton boom is Johnson's starting point for this pellucid study of people, shackles, prices, and society. Cotton induced a mass forced migration of owned people from the tobacco-exhausted Tidewater lands to the fertile Mississippi Valley, about one million of them between the 1820s and 1850s, according to Johnson, an academic historian. A grim sight was common in this period--coffles of slaves walking to the Deep South destined for market, mainly the one at New Orleans. Johnson selects the operations of the market to depict the variegated processes that turned a person into a commodity. Sales could be complicated transactions. Their objects, the enslaved persons, could always ruin value by escape or suicide, and consequently traders and purchasers of people sometimes conceded minimal humanity to placate those in their thrall. Organized with a blessed eschewal of academese, Johnson's work is a superior examination of the speculation in slaves as individuals conducted it. Gilbert Taylor

Insightful look into the antebellum slave market
By Shawn M. Warswick
Walter Johnson’s award winning book, published in 1999, takes a cultural history approach to his study, arguing that the slave market, not the plantation, is the defining feature of slavery in the south. Johnson notes the contradictory nature of the system: the bodies of slaves are assigned a value, but those same bodies are people, not things. Furthermore, in order to do this, slave-sellers use a system of categorization based on physical attributes (skin color, gender, stature). This paradoxical process necessitates the acknowledgement of their individuality as human beings, while, at the same time, it turns them into commodities and property. (Johnson, 5-8) The author also noted that a central piece of his complex argument is slaveholders “often represented themselves to one another by reference to their slaves.” (13) Lastly, Johnson argues that the slaves had some agency in the process by attempting to glean information about their potential owner and in the way they present themselves and answer questions during the sales process.
While the historiography on slavery is often written from the vantage point of the plantation or the slave community, Johnson is the first to insist that the purchasing of slaves was fundamental to what slavery was. In this, he differs from historians such as Eugene D. Genovese whose focus is on the community the slaves create. Having said that, Johnson covers some of the same ground as Genovese (paternalism) and influences other historians such as Stephanie Smallwood whose more recent work also talks about the violence of slavery in Saltwater Slavery: A Middle Passage from Africa to American Diaspora, 2009.
Moreover, when it comes to evidence, Johnson primarily relies upon slave narratives. The author does acknowledge that while there are problems with these (amongst which are their obvious use by abolitionists of the day as political propaganda against the system), by using sources produced by slaveholders and visitors to the south along with the narratives, it is possible to interrogate and authenticate the latter. (Johnson, 11) Johnson also relies upon two hundred court cases of disputed slave sales that went before the Supreme Court of Louisiana, letters by slaveholders, and the sales records generated by the slave trade itself. (Johnson, 12-14) In other words, he has a plethora of primary sources, some of which historians in the past had been wary of using.
Historiographically speaking, Johnson is following in the footsteps of historian Kenneth Stamp and his highly influential The Peculiar Institution: Slavery in the Antebellum South. Stamp argues that slavery was an institution based on profit, not on paternalism (an argument put forward by U.B. Phillips in 1908). However, Johnson was not simply indebted to Stamp; he builds on that argument by showing the importance of the domestic slave trade and arguing (as noted above) that it was the heart of slavery in America by the nineteenth century.
Finally, the book has a number of strengths and very few weaknesses. One of the strengths was the books dialectical approach in which the author moves back and forth between the viewpoint of the slave buyer and seller. As Johnson himself notes, he was attempting “to understand a slave sale from the contingent perspective of each of its participants.” (9) As the narrative advances, it spirals around evidence and analysis used earlier, reinforcing the argument. Another area of strength was the fact that Johnson looks at a subject, which has certainly not suffered from a lack of study, but he does so from a radically different vantage point. It is this uniqueness which makes the book compelling and enjoyable.
Historian Bertram Wyatt Brown, of the University of Florida, criticizes the author of not supporting his conclusions with his evidence. The reviewer then goes on to say the weaknesses do not outweigh the strengths, thereby undercutting his own criticism. In fact, the evidence Johnson brings to his argument is formidable and does support his conclusions. I find it hard to criticize anything in Johnson’s work. In my opinion, it was a masterpiece that stands the test of time and, fifteen years later, continues to influence how historians view the antebellum south and the “peculiar institution.”

The two-sided Racial Holocaust finally explained
By Herbert L Calhoun
Until this book, in all my readings, it never once occurred to me that the template for white justification for the continued unequal racist structure of contemporary American society, was already provided for by the justifications used to cover-up white complicity in the slave trade and in constructing a social structure and ideology based on that complicity.

It has always been self-evident to me that racism in America is and has always been a two-sided human tragedy: a white tragedy first and then a black one afterwards. Yet, since whites always have been able to use their power to cover up their own complicity in a greatly discredited cultural system in which only they benefit, the only narratives we are ever allowed to see are the ones with one side remaining invisible, "white-washed," or "bleached away," and the other side standing-in as the full story of racism in America.

Invariably, the side that we are allowed to see as the singular "stand-in" for the complete racist narrative is that seen only through the victim's eyes. That narrative waxes on in great detail about the color-coded water fountain signs, the seats on the back of the bus, etc., ad infinitum as if these activities occurred from out of the ether without a cause or a causal "agent?"

Telling the story from the victim's perspective is a conscious act itself that kills two birds with one stone: It garners sympathy for the black victims, at the same time that it shields the white perpetrator from complicity as the cause of the evil deeds requiring the sympathy in the first place.

If and when a scapegoat is needed, then, the general all-purpose justification: "the South did it" is often served-up as the sole responsible agent. And even today that "trope" has remained quite sufficient to explain away any and all other white complicity. After all, it is well-known that white southerners are a bunch of "low-lifes" who have sex with their relatives, whose ancestors were emptied from England's jails; and oh, by the way, they did secede from the Union and did lose the Civil War didn't they?

Beyond the southern scapegoat, we are suppose to get the general idea that racism is "just the natural order of things," right?

In this book, for the first time we are able to piece together a narrative of the racial holocaust from the white side of the American cultural ledger as well as from the black, or victim's side. Through recorded testimonies, letters, court records, etc., we get to see how whites trembled with moral fear even as they calculated down to the cent the value of their moral compromises in the dollar value of their slaves; how they made the slave traders the scapegoats for the evil that was the inhuman society that they alone had created. For the first time we get a glimpse at the real "agency" and "agents" of a societal structure that remains in a steady-state even today. And while the South still gets the bulk of the blame, the ideology of justification is global and applies to all whites as well as to the racist system as a whole. All who embrace it and live under its umbrella of racist protection are culpable. There are no whites in America who are innocent of the causes of two centuries of racism, even with a mulatto in the "White" House.

Through the structure of this book, which gives the complete human story during slavery, we do indeed see that the story of America's racial tragedy is indeed a two-sided narrative: On one side of the human ledger is the "impotent but moral" black side, the intended victims of the racial holocaust, the chattel slaves, who since have been allowed to rise to second-class citizenship -- even with a "token" mulatto family in the "White" House.

On the other side of the ledger is the "powerful but always immoral" white side, the slave drivers, the buyers and sellers of human flesh, the perennial resisters of racial equality, a whole race of people identified best by the compromises they have made throughout American history with their religion, with their Constitution and Declaration of Independence, and with their feigned search for freedom: but who are known most of all for the repeated compromises they make everyday with their own consciences to keep America's racist social order in a steady-state.

The "training wheels" for the practices of evading moral responsibility for the racial holocaust, and their narratives of justification, all began with slavery. These powerful, but always invisible perpetrators, following Adolph Hitler, call themselves "superior people" and see themselves as the "Alpha males" of the known universe, and even though they have created a world that "objectifies" this lie, somehow this book makes them seem a lot smaller. A hellava read! 100 stars

New Paradigm for Slave/Owner Relations in the Old South
By Christina K. Miller
"Soul by Soul" is required reading for anyone interested in the history of the American South.
Anyone familiar with the historiography of the antebellum South is familiar with discussions of slaves and owners and "the worlds they made." Genovese, Fox-Genovese, and Sobel, among others, make various arguments about how slaves and owners worked together or in opposition to create the world of the Antebellum South.
Johnson convincingly molds this trope into a new paradigm for discussing the relationships of slaves and owners. He argues that the buying and selling of slaves was central to antebullum white culture -- it was through the buying and selling of slaves that white people sought upward mobility and gentility and it was in discussions of these sales (successful and unsuccessful) that whites judged one another.
In the end, Johnson reformulates the long-standing trope of "worlds made," arguing that slave owners were "made of slaves": their self-image (and, as important in a pre-modern society, their pubic image) was made of their ability to make shrewd decisions both about the purchase and management of slaves.
He also presents convincing evidence that far from being passive victims in the domestic slave trade, African-Americans did, sometimes at great personal risk, influence the terms of their own sale.
Johnson's arguments will shape discussions of slaves and slave owners for many years to come. "Soul by Soul" is required reading for anyone who studies the American South.
