Somethings are GREAT -- others, not so much...

As an college educator in computer science, I am always on the lookout for new programming textbooks that might be helpful for beginning students. Often times, books that are "designed for kids" tend to be awesome for adults as well.

Here's what I like about this book:
- Designed for first-time beginners who know absolutely nothing about programming!
- Teaches the fundamental basics of Python that are needed to create various, fun projects.
- Beautifully illustrated with visual examples. The book just makes you "want" to learn how to program, especially the first chapters!
- Focuses more upon GUI programming, such as how to work with Turtle Graphics, Tkinter, PyGame, etc.

What needs improved:
- Teaches Python 2 (instead of 3 -- the current version).
- Requires users to install PyGame (a game development feature), which works well for Windows-based PCs, but not so much for Mac users.
- Some chapters focus so strongly on making the experience "fun" that the author tends to gloss over important programming concepts without giving them the attention that's needed to ensure the reader adequately grasps them.

Overall, it's a fun book that's helpful to beginners. Yet, there are aspects that should of been improved in order to make it awesome.

Excellent way to learn Python for youngsters – and adults.

The publisher says this a book is intended to help 11 to 15 year olds who want to learn how to program in Python on their own. This is true. Author Craig Richardson does an exemplary job of making programming in Python – and I am not being loose with my words – easy to learn. Not only for kids, but for adults as well. I would instantly recommend this book as an introduction to programming for people with no prior experience in the art.

I like Richardson’s approach. He has created 10 “adventures” to guide the learner through their mastery of basic programming concept and the Python language. (By the way, Richardson specifically prohibits the use of Python 3: for this book, only Python v2.7.8 or later will work.)

The “adventures” are oriented toward simple games which probably has the greatest chance of keeping younger minds involved and won’t bore adults either. All the code is very clearly laid out and is also downloadable. Videos are also available for some topics. (I haven’t worked every code example, so I can’t comment on bugs, if any.) Lots of illustrations as well.

One thing Richardson does that most Python teachers don’t is introduce Tkinter, the module used for creating Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) very early in the game. Many Python instructional don’t mention Tkinter, assuming their readers will use only Command Line driven programs. I think Richardson’s approach, especially for younger learners, is much better and will help keep reader interest.

This is a fun book. It makes learning Python easy and entertaining.

True, Adventures In Python covers mostly basic stuff, much of which will not be terribly useful in the real world. But this book will definitely help the motivated reader become comfortable with bossing the computer around through coding and does provide an understanding of Python.

And, as I said, adults new to programming would find this book useful as well.

In my opinion, an excellent adventure!

FUN/Instructional Guide to Python Programming for Adolescents and Adults. Cross Platform Windows/MAC/Linux/Raspberry Python 2.6+

This instructional and FUN introduction to Python programming aimed at adolescents but appropriate to anyone with minimal programming background has much to recommend it. It has FUN graduated examples beginning with Installation, Hello World-type programs and Turtle Graphics, using graphics for games with the TKinter graphical extrensions, Pygame ending with highly interactive graphical games.
The book is divided into 10 increasingly advanced projects all of which are fun and cross-platform.

The author has taken special care that all of the examples are cross platform. Installation instructions are included for Windows 7 & 8, MAC OS X,
Linux and Raspberry Pi. The author has chosen to use the Python 2.6+ rather than a version of the 3.0+ stream. I believe the reason for this is the wider availability of programming environments and Libraries--indeed most scientific applications of Python default to 2.6+ as certain scientific libraries are not available yet in a 3.0+ release.

Vou fazer este "review" em português porque este livro está em Português, eu o comprei em conjunto com o livro Step by Step Ms Project 2010. Primeiramente li o livro step by step e depois este do Ricardo Vargas. Minha intenção era a de certificar-me e o livro do Ricardo funcionou como um review do Step by Step.

Bem, o livro é direto e cobre bem todos os aspectos necessários e alguns que eu até desconhecia.

Não posso deixar de recomendar porque depois de ler os "DOIS" livros consegui passar na primeira tentativa e com 90% de acerto na prova. Portanto, os dois livros mereceram boas estrelas. O Step By Step é situacional, a todo exemplo existe uma situação em que aquilo poderia ser aplicado. O livro do Ricardo peca neste aspecto e por isso dei 4 estrelas, ficou um pouco parecido com o Help da Microsoft.
É isso, um abraço.

As a Kindle book, not as expected

I bought it as a Kindle book, and I was disapointed that I could not navigate easily between chapters, coming back and forth, as you need with a learning book. I should have remembered that before I bought the book, because that is the only great disadvantage of my Kindle (3 years old).
So, If the newer Kindles also cannot do this, there has to be a warning. I would certainly have bought it then as normal book.
The text is good, well explained, although somewhat short on the subjects, so it is not for beginners. The figures - illustrations - are terrible to see, small and too faded. I hope, only in the E-book edition.

If you have to read Robbin's, get this Pocket Companion!

Any med student knows Robbin's is like running into a 1,500 page brick wall over and over again to become the future Dr. House of the world. The pocket companion is perfect for finding key concepts and reviewing the day or 2 before exams. Cannot live without this Pocket Companion. It's going to get me through class, rotations, residency, and life as a doctor.

Handy to keep around

Reading the Pocket version helped me stomach the monster task of reading the "big" version. This pocket version has most of the details from the book, but not all. It was convenient to bring places - it really did fit into my shorts pockets! The authors intended to capture the wisecracking attitude of the Big Book, but fell well short. Too squeezed for space to include humor.

Good luck to all souls attempting a PBD course.

Deeply spiritual and practical.

I loved this book every moment I was reading it, and it lifts my heart to open it at random and reread passages I highlighted. Lynch says he bases the book on two assumptions. First, he believes whatever is ill with the mentally ill is human. Second, he says that the well can put off the impossible burden of trying to be as well as they think they must be, and can enjoy the privilege of getting tired and being a little mad! He focuses on three major aspects of hope: imagination, mutuality and wishing. He says hopelessness usually involves some constriction of the imagination. Without imagination to picture ways out of difficulties, we lose energy and become too apathetic to wish for anything. On the other hand, Lynch believes our society places all the burden for having and using imagination on the individual. "Half of hope," he says, "is help." On some of the most exciting pages of this book, Lynch describes the theological significance of our being able to wish. If what we want is not sinful or outside the realm of reality, Lynch believes God wants to communicate autonomy to us. Not understanding this can paralyze us. In the world of the mental patient, Lynch has seen a person agonize over making the "right" decision between a cup of coffee or a cup of tea. He shares the metaphor of a child who makes a toy that can operate on its own and shouts, "Look at it go!" A Living Classic

I read this book when it first came out in the 1960s. It became my favourite then, and it still is. I reread this book almost every year. When I call it a "living" classic, I mean precisely that: it is the fuel for living because it provides the mental scope, architecture and thinking processes to live a full and healthy life. The book has been an anchor for me for over 30 years precisely because it positions the role of imagination in such a clear fashion as the instrument of living. Imagination is not only healer of the hopeless, it is the healer of the process of living. I cannot thank the author enough for his contribution.

It remains the best examination of hope I've ever read

I bought this to put next to the well marked-up copy I bought about fifty years ago. Lynch looks at hope from not only a religious point of view, but a psychological point of view as well. It remains the best examination of hope I've ever read, and one of my "top ten" lifetime books. The supplemental readings alone are worth the price of the book.

Real deal beyond CRUD in rails!

I got modular rails because I was interested in moving from a monolithic app and interested in advancing my knowledge of intermediate to advanced rails. As a guy who teaches at a bootcamp, there comes a time when you want students to move from the usual CRUD nonsense and on to proper software architectural patterns even in the context of a framework.
I shared the table of contents with a colleague of mine from the US and he too agreed that this book was the deal.
