From the Back Cover
Principles of Optics is one of the classic science books of the twentieth century. It presents optics deductively as a system based on Maxwell's equations. It deals with those optical phenomena that can be described with the help of a continuous distribution of matter and aims at giving a complete picture of our knowledge of optics as a whole.

This standard reference continues to be invaluable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers working in most areas of optics.

Principles of Optics

This is a great book that I have used often. This is a graduate text. You should have had an undergraduate course in optics first. A typical undergraduate text that I recommend is Optics by Eugene Hecht who also wrote the Schaum's Outline for Optics. This being a graduate text you should have taken math for each of the four years of your undergraduate studies. My graduate work is in Microelectronics & Photonics and I use the book now as reference book. This book covers the theory very well; I have not found any other book that even comes close.

Optics by Born and Wolf
By Wilhelm
This book is the most comprehensive and readable book in all my books collected in optics. I specifically like the chapters devoted to geometrical optics and the rigorous treatment of diffraction. I have do doubt at all in my assignment of five stars to this book. It is no wonder that many of the scientists and engineers in NASA have the book in their possession.

Born and Wolf - best theoretical book

Without any doubt, Born and Wolf are still the deepest theory book. Consider this book as the main source for most of other optical books.

From Early History to Designing for the Web
By John Matlock
Type is the way we convey written information. Down through the centuries type faces have been developed to not only convey the raw information, but to do so in attractive and pleasing ways. Type faces continue to be developed for all kinds of uses that the designers of years ago couldn't have imagined: the dot matrix print outs of a cash register, the type face you are seeing right now as you read this on a computer screen.

This book presents an overview of type and typography fron the earliest greek alphabets (showing how the letters were derived) to modern times. It is not a textbook on how to design type, but more of an idea book illustrating what a lot of people have done in a wide variety of situations. It would be a very helpful read to anyone designing a book, print ads, or web pages.

Visual Collection of Typography.
By B. MOOGK
This is really one firm's style book and their personal encyclopedia of typographical knowledge. The advice on style is quirky. The guide to accessing hidden glyphs on your keboard is full of errors. The mark-up guide is not in agreement with the standard Chicago method. Their collection of objects and typographic samples are of great historical interest and the illustrations will illuminate many typographical points.

Knowledge management within Tesco (Learning from Tesco's management), by Payam Haerifar

Research paper from the year 2012 in the subject Information Management, University of Derby, language: English, abstract: In contrast of classical economy in neoclassical economy, knowledge is one of the main factors of production. Since the mid-1980s, there has been an increasing recognition that “knowledge is a fundamental factor behind an enterprise’s success”. Scholar emphasises on invaluableness of knowledge and its dominant role among the other competitive advantages. They argue that knowledge causes sustainability in volatile environment. And many executives inaugurated methods of knowledge management as a complementary process of previous activities; such as total quality management (TQM), to grab some more competitive advantages among their rivals.

The first brick of structuring knowledge management (KM) is identifying the meaning of knowledge, information and data. These definitions and their differences are mentioned beneath the literature review. And one of the most novel and powerful KM framework is introduced which comes from communication science. In the field of communication science, there is one dominant theory for process of information sharing which is based on mathematics and statistical analyses. By interpreting this model to organisation’s routine activities, companies can use it as a basic framework for the whole process of knowledge sharing.

This model of knowledge sharing (communication model) has a better control over finding barriers among the other frameworks. More than dozens of barriers are declared in the scientific journals, but some of them may reveal within the particular case and by utilising this model it is possible to categorised barriers in manifold ways. Besides, communication framework has more clarity. This model elucidates relations among various parts of organisations, so finding critical success factors are easier than before. This model also supports other dominant theories in KM and KMS; such as knowledge creation, which this part will be discussed concisely.

Suggesting a new KM method is based on communication framework model. Tesco has significant IT infrastructure and data mining. The new KM framework utilise current method and also use current KM for justifying the knowledge. This is very important that knowledge should be justified. This new KM framework focuses on employee’s perception that is not exploited by other retailers in UK; therefore, it can become one the key competitive advantages for Tesco.

The Antidote: Happiness for People Who Can't Stand Positive Thinking, by Oliver Burkeman

Self-help books don't seem to work. Few of the many advantages of modern life seem capable of lifting our collective mood. Wealth—even if you can get it—doesn't necessarily lead to happiness. Romance, family life, and work often bring as much stress as joy. We can't even agree on what "happiness" means. So are we engaged in a futile pursuit? Or are we just going about it the wrong way?

Looking both east and west, in bulletins from the past and from far afield, Oliver Burkeman introduces us to an unusual group of people who share a single, surprising way of thinking about life. Whether experimental psychologists, terrorism experts, Buddhists, hardheaded business consultants, Greek philosophers, or modern-day gurus, they argue that in our personal lives, and in society at large, it's our constant effort to be happy that is making us miserable. And that there is an alternative path to happiness and success that involves embracing failure, pessimism, insecurity, and uncertainty—the very things we spend our lives trying to avoid. Thought-provoking, counterintuitive, and ultimately uplifting, The Antidote is the intelligent person's guide to understanding the much-misunderstood idea of happiness.

Amazon.com Review
Amazon Best Books of the Month, November 2012: The you-can-do-it, life-is-one-big-smiley-face ethos of our contemporary culture has its value: Aggressive positivity helps many triumph over addiction, say, or build previously unimaginable businesses, even win elections and wars. But according to Oliver Burkeman, this relentless pursuit of happiness and success can also make us miserable. Exploring the dark side of the theories put forth by such icons as Norman Vincent Peale and Eckhart Tolle by looking to both ancient philosophy and current business theory, Burkeman--a feature writer for British newspaper The Guardian--offers up the counterintuitive idea that only by embracing and examining failure and loss and unhappiness will we become free of it. So in your next yoga class, try this: breathe deep, think unhappy thoughts--and feel your soul relax. --Sara Nelson

Review

“Burkeman's tour of the ‘negative path' to happiness makes for a deeply insightful and entertaining book. This insecure, anxious and sometimes unhappy reader found it quite helpful.” ―Hector Tobar, The Los Angeles Times

“Some of the most truthful and useful words on [happiness] to be published in recent years . . . A marvellous synthesis of good sense, which would make a bracing detox for the self-help junkie.” ―Julian Baggini, The Guardian

“The Antidote is a gem. Countering a self-help tradition in which ‘positive thinking' too often takes the place of actual thinking, Oliver Burkeman returns our attention to several of philosophy's deeper traditions and does so with a light hand and a wry sense of humor. You'll come away from this book enriched--and, yes, even a little happier.” ―Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind

“Quietly subversive, beautifully written, persuasive, and profound, Oliver Burkeman's book will make you think--and smile.” ―Alex Bellos, author of Here's Looking at Euclid

“Addictive, wise, and very funny.” ―Tim Harford, author of The Undercover Economist

“What unites [Burkeman's] travels, and seems to drive the various characters he meets, from modern-day Stoics to business consultants, is disillusionment with a patently false idea that something as complex as the goal of human happiness can be found by looking in a book . . . It's a simple idea, but an exhilarating and satisfying one.” ―Alexander Larman, The Observer

“This is an excellent book; Burkeman makes us see that our current approach, in which we want happiness but search for certainty--often in the shape of material goods--is counterproductive.” ―William Leith, The Telegraph

“Fascinating . . . After years spent consulting specialists--from psychologists to philosophers and even Buddhists--Burkeman realised they all agreed on one thing: . . . in order to be truly happy, we might actually need to be willing to experience more negative emotions--or, at least, to learn to stop running so hard from them.” ―Mandy Francis, The Daily Mail

“Splendid . . . Readable and engaging.” ―British Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, The Times (London)

Not a justification of pessimism, just the opposite
By MichaelInVenice
For those who walk around with a scowl on their face all day and hope to find in this book the secret to being happy while being angry, depressed or forlorn, this books will probably not the mark, because there is no mark to hit.

But if you're just one of those many people out there like myself who's trying to avoid being angry and upset, but who doesn't buy the "be happy and wonderful things will happen to you" mantra, this book will be interesting. I say "interesting" not "enlightening" because it is a surface treatment covering everything from ancient stoicism to Buddhism to modern-day Santa Muerte beliefs and as such can't possibly be deep enough to be enlightening. It does go deep enough to show the common theme running through many beliefs, that happiness is ultimately related to finding a way to be content and productive in the world as it is, without devoting too much of our energy to struggling against it. The book does not suggest that we not try to better ourselves or the world around us, but does make the point that it is the struggle against our condition that is likely to make us unhappy far more than the condition we're in to begin with.

I found this book to be an interesting departure point, suggesting several others that I suspect will be more enlightening, rather than merely interesting.

Debby Downer was on to something.
By Dustin G. Rhodes
I am a sucker. Feature a writer on National Public Radio, and the interview is mildly entertaining, I will buy the book. I will also probably read it -- the only question remaining: will I actually like it?

The Antidote, for sure, is personally fascinating. I abhor positive thinking, gravitating instead toward reality. But I didn't come by this easily. In my early 20's, I became obsessed with all manner of self help, positive thinking and new age spirituality. I devoured (embarrassing) self help books, feeling temporarily inspired by them while making feeble attempts to put the words into practice. Inevitably, I'd feel like a failure for not being able to be perfect -- or even slightly "better" than I was before; I'd feel consumed with anger and resentment, too, that my problems didn't magically go away; that life wasn't easier. It took me a LONG TIME to realize that my faux spirituality was primarily the cause of my dissatisfaction and pain.

My actual problems were far less annoying than the books I was reading to solve them.

I wish I'd read The Antidote 15 years ago.

The Antidote travels familiar -- to me, a junkie, at least -- terrain. If you've ever read a book on buddhism (through a pop culture lens), for instance, much of this won't be new: accept life as it is. But the context will; the author blends storytelling, cutting edge research, personal anecdote and wry humor into this compelling case for what he refers to as the negative path; the wisdom of the Stoics as a sane approach to life.

I am torn as to how many stars to offer; for whatever reason, I wasn't in love with the book as a whole. The author is certainly a talented writer, but I felt like the book went on and on. And on. This kind of thing, yes, is highly subjective, so take it with a grain of salt. To me, this book would have been a lot better had it been a lot shorter. I often feel this way about non-fiction books -- that there's a quota to fill. What's wrong with lean and mean?

(OK, OK: the book is not actually that long, so maybe it's my attention span).

It also bears mentioning that reading The Antidote is not actually the antidote for, really, anything: you actually have to live -- which means accepting that life is hard and messy and sometimes ugly and awful; it means not constantly trying to escape it.

But if you're obsessed with The Secret, then you need this book. The Secret will not-so-secretly let you down, again and again. The Antidote contains actual valuable advice: there are no shortcuts, magical thinking is useless and, my favorite: a little negativity will make us happier.

He argues that our attempts to find happiness by thinking positively
By Christina B.
In The Antidote, Burkeman attempts to provide a counterpoint to the ubiquitous positive-thinking messages we hear, from The Secret to corporate goal setting. He argues that our attempts to find happiness by thinking positively, concentrating on success, eliminating doubt, and setting specific goals actually make us more unhappy. As some one whose response to "positive thinking" is typically eye-rolling, I was excited to read the book, hoping to find useful tidbits that would help me utilize my more cynical view of life to my advantage. And while there are a few points in the book I found interesting, I was also disappointed by the vague and philosophy-heavy descriptions of alternatives to positive thinking Burkeman presents, from Buddhist meditation to Stoicism.

The book isn't intended as a step-by-step "improve your life" guide like many of the positive-thinking tomes, which I appreciated. But I suppose the downside is that the book also doesn't provide much for people who want to use a more negative approach to grab a hold of. Some of its generalities, though, were interesting. For example, Burkeman argues that rather than set goals, people should take stock of what they have, and begin working from there. Or, the best way to avoid procrastination is not to try to "feel like" doing something--just do it regardless. And for all those irritations in life, Burkeman suggests that we view it not in terms of something being done to us (that kid over there is annoying me) but in terms of how we respond (I'm annoyed because I believe he is annoying). Some of the other ideas I was more familiar with from my psychologist husband, such as imagining worst-case scenarios or separating your sense of self from your feelings, and others from my work as an educator (e.g., the importance of having an incremental mindset about intelligence and ability rather than an innate).

There are certainly things that will stay with me: when I next hear about how Bob Smith became a millionaire because he was perseverant, I'll remember survivor bias--and note that we've ignored all those people who were perseverant and failed. But, as a whole, the book was too focused on philosophy and on quoting various philosophers and not focused enough on practical matters for it to be much use to me.

Natural Language Syntax (Oxford Textbooks in Linguistics), by Peter W. Culicover

In this book, Peter Culicover introduces the analysis of natural language within the broader question of how language works - of how people use languages to configure words and morphemes in order to express meanings. He focuses both on the syntactic and morphosyntactic devices that languages use, and on the conceptual structures that correspond to particular aspects of linguistic form. He seeks to explain linguistic forms and in the process to show how these correspond with meanings.

The book's clear, step-by-step exposition is presented within the Simpler Syntax framework whose development has been led by the author and Ray Jackendoff over the last fifteen years. This integrates syntactic theory with the representation of conceptual structure and casts fresh light on the interface between syntax and semantics. It also enables elegant and economical analyses of natural language phenomena without recourse to such abstract devices as functional heads and uniform binary branching.

Peter Culicover opens his account with an overview of the nature of language and the aims of its analysis. He then divides the book into parts devoted to syntactic categories, syntactic structure and argument structure, argument realization, unbounded dependencies, and clausal structure. He provides exercises, problems, and suggestions for further reading throughout the book.

To Live's to Fly: The Ballad of the Late, Great Townes Van Zandt, by John Kruth

At last, the authorized biography of Townes Van Zandt (1944-1997), who wrote such unforgettable songs as “Pancho & Lefty” and “If I Needed You.” Born to a wealthy oil family in Ft. Worth, Texas, hounded by alcoholism and depression, Van Zandt pursued a nomadic existence following his muse, whatever the cost to himself, friends, and relatives. Based on exclusive interviews with those close to Van Zandt, including his best friend Guy Clark and colleagues like Steve Earle and John Prine, To Live’s to Fly captures all the humor, hijinks, poetry, and heartbreak of this revered, genuinely outlaw country artist.

From Publishers Weekly
Finally, the first official biography of singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt (1944-1997) arrives; unfortunately, the life story of this troubled Texas troubadour is nearly as grueling to read as it was for Van Zandt to live. Kruth (Bright Moments: The Life and Legacy of Rahsaan Roland Kirk) deserves credit for interviewing scores of family members, friends and associates, but his efforts are diminished by oddly alternating first- and third-person narratives, awkward transitions and text cluttered with excessive quotes. In addition, many anecdotes and quotes from Van Zandt lack attribution. That said, Kruth (a veteran musician himself) shines when providing perspective on the evolving American folk scene and in dissecting numerous albums (some issued after Van Zandt's New Year's Day death at age 52). To be sure, Van Zandt's outrageous penchant for gambling, alcohol and women, not to mention his irresponsible career management, make him a less-than-sympathetic character; more insight into why-rather than countless tales of how-would have made this bio a more worthwhile read.

From Booklist
Not unlike fellow alt-country inspiration Gram Parsons, Townes Van Zandt was born rich yet became an iconic country singer and countercultural hero. Discovering Leadbelly, Mance Lipscomb, and Lightnin' Hopkins at an early age, he was an ardent "Elvis fan and a good Elvis mimic" to boot. Recognized reasonably widely as "a living legend, albeit more often than not an unknown one," he got fellow alt-country icon Steve Earle's nod as "the best songwriter in the world," which sentiment Earle said he'd "stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and say." Van Zandt famously replied, "I've met Bob Dylan's bodyguards and if Steve Earle thinks he can stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table, he's sadly mistaken." Self-deprecating, wistful, haunted by a rasher of demons, Van Zandt died young, leaving behind such songs as Willie Nelson's hit "Pancho & Lefty" and influencing many younger performers. Kruth's enthusiasm for Van Zandt is obvious throughout his detail-laden yet very readable book, which well might revive Van Zandt's memory. Mike Tribby

Review
"Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the whole world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that." -- Steve Earle

"I think of Townes as the greatest folk song writer that my native state of Texas ever gave birth to. Some of us songwriters are just lyricists, but he was definitely a poet." -- Nanci Griffith

"A fervent tribute to a true legend of American songwriting. John Kruth has tracked the back story of Townes Van Zandt like a manic bloodhound without spoiling the mystery of the man." -- Sam Shepard

A bumpy ride, but worth the fare.
By D. V. Beck
Hang in there with this one. Kruth gets off to a shaky start, with one early chapter consisting entirely of an account of a drunken Guy Clark essentially telling the author to go to hell. But the narrative acquires power and tragic beauty as one of the most talented songwriters of all time slowly destroys himself with alcohol and drugs. The end of Van Zandt's life will look all too familiar to anyone who's ever watched an alcoholic ride the disease to the end of the line - the sheer horror of reaching the point where he can't continue to drink, and can't quit drinking, either. If you haven't already done so, you may want to steep yourself in Van Zandt's music before you read To Live's to Fly. Besides being required for anyone who gives a damn about the art of songwriting, I'm pretty sure this is a prerequisite to sticking out this tale to the bitter end.

A lackluster effort based on even less research
By Folk Music Fan
The excitment I had when I got my hands on a copy of the new TVZ book matched the disappointment I suffered as I read through it. I did read the entire book - in part out of dumb dedication to my favorite songwriters & in part hoping that the book would improve. This book doesn't flow; it is a collage of events & quotes loosely organized by topic. Many of the quotes are identical to those printed in the 1970's issue limited edition songbook with this book failing to give credit to the primary source (perhaps appropriately so, but I have my doubts). The author's interpretations of certain songs are questionable in most cases and dead wrong in one specific case. Perhaps due to the author's clearly northwestern attitude towards Texas music or maybe because of his awkward writing style, several people of great significance in TVZ's life refused to provide interviews for this book. It is extremely telling that Susanna Clark refused as she was his best friend & closest confidant who knew him better than any of us. Though it is hard to recommend this book, it does aggregate a lot of quotes and anecdotes about Townes life in one place and that is helpful. The mediocre quality of writing, lack of primary research, and typical New York attitude do the memory of Townes a great disservice.

I don't know where to start....
By T. Brenholts
I wrote this out of a sense of duty to fans of music and readers of biographies. If you are a fan of Townes VanZandt, or if you like to read good writing, go put on an album, and read something other than this mess. Although I enjoy VanZandt's music I knew little of his life other than he was an alcoholic, so I was delighted to finally see a "biography"; what this is is a collection of anecdotes hung on the names of people who knew VanZandt. As a previous reviewer wrote, chronology is a joke, Guy Clark is given short shrift (the chapter on the author's meeting with Clark is jarringly incongruous to the rest of the text and may give insight into why this is so; they seem to have not hit it off well), and insight and understanding are nowhere in sight. It's got nothing to do with "New York attitude" or "Yankee journalist"; it's about lousy writing. This is a stinker, to be avoided. "Barely coherent as a writer" (says reviewer W.E. Black, who is spot on in his review); exactly so. This is the most poorly written biography I've ever read. One star because the subject is Townes VanZandt. Otherwise unreadable.
