Why did I pass on this book for so long???

For over 20 years I saw this book on store shelves and it didn't resonate with me. I think I was intimidated by it. In the past year, though, I saw reviews of other books where the reviewers kept referring to and comparing to the books of Hogarth. Then I came across his entire series of books in my local library and took a deeper look at "Dynamic Anatomy" and "Dynamic Figure Drawing". What I didn't realize until actually reading these books is that Hogarth makes sure you understand not only the anatomy, but every defining subtle detail of the human figure that is normally taken for granted and not consciously identified. Moreover, he draws and describes each part in three dimensional shapes and uses metaphorical descriptions that can't be forgotten. The man was genius for not only being able to see things the way he did, but more so for being able to articulate it to others as well as he did.

Best of all, in combination with "Dynamic Figure Drawing", he teaches us how to build a person in any pose in your mind and then render and sculpt that form in three dimensions on paper (or screen) without any need to reference anything. Don't try to do it with "Dynamic Figure Drawing" alone. I started with that book and couldn't wait to jump into "Dynamic Anatomy" to get a better understanding of the fundamentals.

The books are so good (and affordable), that even though I could have easily continued to check them out from the library, I purchased them to have the ultimate reference on hand at all times. They're a must for anyone rendering the human form.

Great Book.

I love the book so far. It breaks down the different components of the human figure in a very specific and detailed manner. I give it four stars instead of five only because the illustrations don't quite follow what is written on that page; you end up having to skip ahead a page or two to see the picture that goes along with what he is saying.

Side note: Motor City Books (whom I bought this book from used through Amazon) needs to at least check what is in their books before they ship them. This creepy note fell out of it.

Dynamic Anatomy

This is a very good reference book for learning to draw the human figure in action. I am a commercial artist and designer, but have worked for many years on non-figurative projects. I am focusing on figurative work again, primarily in the game, fantasy and science fiction field. My goal is to draw entirely from imagination without having to use reference material, and this book by Burne Hogarth and his Drawing Dynamic Hands are helping me to reach this goal. The illustrations are very well done with good explanation and many drawings showing the figure in action. The muscles are heroic in proportion, which helps in identifying them. As an artist, you can choose to emphasize them or not... but knowing the structure is very important. I have had many life drawing sessions and have always been taught to "draw what you see", but over the years I have come to the conclusion that "drawing what you know" is equally important, both for time efficiency and quality of the finished illustration or painting. I highly recommend this book for any artist that is serious about drawing the human figure in action.

About the Author
"Serope Kalpakjian" taught and conducted research at the Illinois Institute of Technology for 38 years prior to his retirement in 2001 as professor emeritus of mechanical and materials engineering. After graduating from Robert College (high honors), Harvard University, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, he joined Cincinnati Milacron, where he was a research supervisor in advanced metal-forming processes. He is the author of numerous technical papers and several articles in handbooks and encyclopedias and has edited various conference proceedings. In addition, Professor Kalpakjian has served on the editorial bards of several journals and the Encyclopedia Americana and is the coauthor of "Lubricants and Lubrication in Metalworking Operations." Both first editions of his textbooks, "Manufacturing Processes for Engineering Materials and Manufacturing Engineering and Technology," have received the M. Eugene Merchant Manufacturing Textbook Award. He is a Life Fellow of the ASME, Fellow of the SME, Fellow and Life Member of ASM International, emeritus member of CIRP (International Institution for Production Engineering Research), and a founding member and past president of NAMRI/SME.

Among the awards Professor Kalpakjian has received are the Forging Industry Educational and Research Foundation Best Paper Award (1966), an Excellence in Teaching Award from IIT (1970), the Centennial Medallion from the ASME (1980), the International Education Award from the SME (1989), a Person of the Millennium Award from IIT (1999), and the Albert Easton White Distinguished Teacher Award from ASM International (2000). SME named the Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award afterProfessor Kalpakjian for the year 2002.

"Steven R. Schmid" is an associate professor with the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, University of Notre Dame, where he teaches and performs research in the general areas of manufacturing, machine design, and tribology. As the director of the Manufacturing Tribology Laboratory at the university, he oversees industry- and government-funded research on a variety of manufacturing topics, including tribological issues in rolling, forging and sheet-metal forming, polymer processing, medical-device design and manufacture, and nanomechanics.

He received the B.S. degree in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (with honors) and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees, both in mechanical engineering, from Northwestern University. He has received numerous awards, including the John T Parsons Award from the SME (2000), the Newkirk Award from the ASME (2000), and the Kaneb Center Teaching Award (2000). He is the recipient of a National Science Foundation CAREERS Award (1996) and an ALCOA Foundation Award (1994). Dr. Schmid is the author of over 50 technical papers; has edited three conference proceedings; has coauthored two books, "Fundamentals o f Machine Elements and Manufacturing Engineering and Tecbnology;" and has contributed two chapters to the "CRC Handbook of Modern Tribology." He serves on the Tribology Division Executive Committee of the ASME, is an associate editor of the "Journal o f Manufacturing Science and Engineering," and is a registered professional engineer and certified manufacturing engineer.

Oversimplified

The emphasis of this book seems to be more on the basic mechanics of the different processes it describes. That's fine, and important to understand manufacturing, but...
BUT, he gives very little attention to how the material being processed responds to the processing. Without a better understanding of the microstructural effects -- and ensuing DEfects -- it may be too hard to troubleshoot the processes described in this book.
My professor was flipping through the early chapters of this book (where the materials issues are presented) and declared them "cheesy."
So, to sum up: this good book becomes great by combining it with other books/courses/professors/etc that will interject materials issues into this books discussion of the mechanical issues.

Incredible content, poor binder quality

I have not had a chance to really delve into the content. But paging through the book, I am very excited to go deeper. The book seems to touch on almost all mfg processes, even addressing material behavior, metallurgy, tribology, and some other wide ranging subjects that affect manufacturing.

That being said, I bought this book "new" from Amazon and it has several gouges on the front and back cover. Also the back cover hinge looks like someone took a knife to it so that there's only the inside glued paper that's holding the hard cardboard onto the book. Never seen anything like this from Amazon.

Best used as a reference, not learning tool

Peter Jones is an SAP superstar, but this book, unfortuantely, is a disappointment as a means of learning SAP BPC 10.0. Sridhar Srinivasan's SAP Business Planning and Consolidation 3rd edition for BPC 10.0 is much better suited for that purpose.

You don't learn to play the piano by staring at sheet music. Once you touch the keys you can connect the sound with the notes written. Similarly, you learn SAP BPC by doing and only Sridhar's book develops a single case study from beginning to end to allow you to master the basics before proceeding to more advanced topics.

Once you see how BPC works following step by step in Sridhar's book, then Peter's book will make more sense. Tim Soper was Peter's collaborator, and with a background in training delivery, let users down by not enforcing the proper sequencing of ideas/topics.

Example: Showing drill down of customer hierarchy on page 165, but not showing the loading of customer master data until page 329.

Example: Annoying, consistent habit of displaying blank entry forms. On page 91, how much effort is it to type in the values of ID, Description for the account type selected.

Peter's explanation of currency conversion appears complete, but if you step back a minute, you can't help but appreciate how much more work doing translations is in BPC than in native ECC where they are done largely automatically behind the scenes. New tools = more work, there is something wrong with the equation. Why hasn't SAP lifted the code of currency translation from ECC and dumped it into BPC, for all but the must unusual situations?

The biggest hole in this "advanced" book is the short shrift it gives to BPC planning models, not even 10 pages. Anyone with exposure to SAP Course SEM215 Integrated Financial Planning with BPS may note that building models was previously a five day course.

Finally, very little attention is given to clarifying differences between BI and BPC functionality and the retraction of BPC results back into R/3. For example, when is BI-Trade Promotion Management using for planning purposes as opposed to BPC-Trade Promotion management. How is sales and operations planning done, if at all in BPC? Why BPC models that require you to write forumulas to calculate depreciation when the formulas are all in ECC and depreciation can easily be posted to cost center plans both for existing assets and future assets planned on investment orders. In short, the sleekness and simplicity that once was the hallmark of SAP planning is now diffused over three products with overlapping capabilities and little attempt to explain/differentiate best practices.

These are the very topics that cry out for a book, which is not training material.

Sridhar's book, even after its 3rd edition, still has numberous omissions and typos; the transaction file for downloading available from SAP press and his screen print ignores that revenues must be loaded as credits, for starters. So maybe there's hope that an author of Peter's stature can rise to the occasion with revision or perhaps new book on how to use SAP planning tools, rather than the nitty gritty of the toolset.

I like BPC 7.5 by Sridhar and continue reading that book.
Comparing with other book, it does look like book for new person and want to pickup quickly.
In Sridhar book, diagrams are well illustrated.

About the Author
Charles Chapman is a professor in the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music where he has taught since 1972. He is a versatile jazz guitarist with extensive performing and recording experience. Charles holds a Bachelor's degree from Berklee College and a Master's of Education from Cambridge College. He performed four tunes on the Mel Bay's compilation CD "Anthology of Jazz Guitar Solos" and all nine solos on the CD that accompanies the text "Guitar Solos" by George Van Eps (MB94822BCD) and has just released a solo CD titled "Come Sunset". Charles has published eight texts with Mel Bay Publications and now performs on a regular basis at guitar shows and jazz festivals internationally. As a music journalist he has interviewed many of the most prominent guitarists in the field and is a frequent contributor to Guitar Player, Acoustic Guitar, Fender Frontline, 20th Century Guitar, Mel Bay's Guitar Sessions®, All AboutJazz, Dowbeat and Just Jazz Guitar magazines with over 400 published articles and reviews. Charles has appeared in concert with such luminaries as: Martin Taylor, Kenny Burrell, Joe Negri Jimmy Bruno, Frank Vignola, John Pisano, Ted Greene, Carol Kaye, Jerry Jemmott and Dwane Dolphin. He is an Artist Endorser for Fender/Guild Corporation and Benedetto Guitars.

Wonderful chord-melody solos. The TAB is really off the mark in this book. FYI the original books didn't contain any TAB. In any case, these are a must have, along with your Sor, Jimmy Wyble, and Lenny Breau.
