About the Author

Anne Coles is a Research Associate at the International Gender Studies Centre, Oxford University, UK. She was previously a senior social development adviser in Britain’s Department for International Development and has chaired two development NGOs. Her research interests include migration, people’s responses to harsh environments, and public health. Recent publications include Gender, Water and Development, Gender and Family among Transnational Professionals (as co-editor and contributor), and Windtower (2007, reprinted 2009).

Leslie Gray is a geographer and Executive Director of the Environmental Studies Institute at Santa Clara University, USA. Her current research considers agrarian and environmental change in Burkina Faso and food justice in California. She has published articles on environmental policy, land degradation, and women’s access to resources in Burkina Faso and Sudan. This research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, Fulbright/IIE and the Social Science Research Council.

Janet Momsen has taught at universities in the UK, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the USA. She is Emerita Professor of Geography at the University of California, Davis, USA and was a Board member of AWID. She is currently a Senior Research Associate in the Oxford University Centre for the Environment, a Research Associate in the International Gender Studies Centre at Oxford University, and a Trustee of the development NGO, INTRAC. She has published over 170 articles in refereed journals and chapters in books and authored or edited 18 books.

Peter Shotwell is an internationally known expert on the relationship of Go to Eastern and Western philosophy, literature, and history. He has been writing about Go for nearly twenty years and has lived in China, Tibet, and Japan while researching the origins and background of the game.

Not a laundry list

I was disappointed to read the last comment since I know the author and what he was trying to do and, as a go teacher, have seen his technique work on many people. As he stated on the first page ("How to Use This Book"), he was not trying to write a book that would just be thrown away after its contents were learned. That is for laundry list books and there are several hundred of them available in English for various stages of one's go career. What he wanted to do was to introduce readers to the dynamics of go playing--go is a game, after all, and not a course in school. What he advised the reader to do was to go as far as possible through the games in the book until they were stuck, then play alot (and, yes, also look at the laundry list books!), then come back, play some more and etc. That way, say over a period of time (and not just with one reading, as it looks like some commentators have done), one would get the feel for playing on, first simple 9 x 9 boards, then 13 x 13 and finally the full, complex, 19 x 19 size. By the time one finished, one would be completely conversant with any go player, and know much of go's 4,000 year-old culture and history. That doesn't mean you would *know* all of the techniques--only by playing and studying can you do that--but you would *know about* most of them and, you would also know what you *didn't know* and needed to. In other words, because of the immense amount of ground and the different levels it covers, the book is meant to be a launching pad into the world of go, and that it does admirably and certainly far better than any other beginner's book!

Lots of Taoist mysticism and a fair introduction to Go

There are two games of Go, the forest-and-trees welter of confusion that a beginner sees, and the game within the game that everyone else comes to terms with. Shotwell's book can bring you past the boulders of confusion and leave you standing beside the deep water. Whether you swim or not... :) He's also a geisha, in the well-known Reischauer/Culture of Japan academic style, so much of the book is full of reverent Taoist and Kung Fu mysticism which may be fun, but should be transcended as soon as you "see" the inner game. It's beside the point. Bottom line, I like this book. It nudged my game forward. That said, if you want to learn Go, you should get a good computer Go game, like Go4++ (Windows, commercial) or Sente Goban (Mac OS X, freeware), dumb it down and play until you win. Then come back to this book. There's a lot of satisfaction in that first win against a computer, and it helps the book make sense.

Way above average

I am a long-time tournament chess player who is seeking to get beyond just knowing the basic rules of Go. This new title seems to offer a lot more bang for the buck than others I've reviewed. It even looks like a better buy than any single volume in the highly-regarded Janice Kim series (which has apparently risen in price due to high demand). Cost being no object, it would surely be better to own the first two or three books in that series, but given the price I think this offers better value in a single volume.
It's nicely written and handsomely laid out, and seems quite up-to-date (with information about playing on the Internet and the current [weak] state of Go-playing software).
I have over 250 chess books and consider myself quite knowledgeable in that field. This is, however, my first Go book. I fully acknowledge not having the experience to definitively judge quality as well as a long-time tournament player or teacher could. But having been around the block in life and having looked at a lot of Go titles before choosing, I can pretty strongly say that you could do a LOT worse.
In its price range, this fine new book could well become THE one to have.

Great Book, Great Message

This is a memoir of how the author, who endured a less-than-perfect childhood, turned the tables on life and found her own success. Many self-help guides rely heavy on motivational speeches, but not this one. The author includes anecdotes from her own life as well as the steps she took to go from a maid to a Ph D. The tone throughout the book is one of encouragement and hope. Recommended for anyone who feels "stuck", and just needs a push in the right direction.

Good message. Awkward writing.

Apparently I reviewed an older version of this book when I first reviewed it back in February. The author has since sent me an updated copy, and though I feel my original review still applies, I'll add a few more thoughts.

The newest version actually does not contain as much autobiographical information as the book I read originally. There are some personal anecdotes, but the book focuses much less on Connor's past experiences and more on giving advice on living life to the fullest. Truth be told, I kind of miss those more personal elements, because those stories were my favorite part of the original book.

While the newest version is slightly more focused than the original, unfortunately, there is still a lot of clunky writing. Many of these sentences could have been edited down (or maybe even out); as is, a lot of the writing is unnatural, forced, and confusing. For example, Connor says "There is no circumstance or condition that cannot be changed through natural agreement with the methods in which all existing matter is given life...With understanding of the ways to adjust the foundation of the subconscious, and the manner in which it habitually uses external validation, we may meet any failure with the conversion of achievement by monitoring ourselves intently." I think I get the gist of what she is saying, but that whole thought could have been stated much more clearly and simply.

In short, while I can appreciate the positive message that Connor is trying to communicate, her book is rough around the edges. I truly do admire the perseverance Connor showed while enduring so much hardship (especially as a child), but I still have a hard time making sense of Self-Maid.

Jessica Connor has been through it. My goodness. In Self-Maid, she describes the many serious hardships she has overcome. My heart definitely goes out to her for what she has experienced, and I commend her for being willing to talk about it. The fact that she has taken such negative experiences and turned them into something very positive for herself is admirable.

Though I think there is a good message in these pages, I have to say, the writing in here is rough. It's unnatural and doesn't flow. Word choices and sentence structure are both awkward, sometimes even nonsensical. For example, "Yet, to grasp it fully after years of arrangement in the opposite direction of where we would like to be can make it a task." Or "Freedom infused the filaments of my composition." I mean, huh? So much of this book just doesn't make sense, and it is difficult to soldier on and get through it.

HOWEVER, if you can overlook the awkwardness of the language, Connor does have a good (albeit, very familiar) message. Basically, she wants people to know that they have the power to change their lives the way she has changed her life. Through the power of positive words, positive thinking, visualization, meditation, good energy, following your own path, gratitude, and forgiveness, you can turn "bad luck" into something better, something positive and intentional.

Though it wasn't anything new to me, I appreciate the message. Mostly, I am just happy for Connor that she was able to rise above the situation she was in. I wish the writing in this book were stronger, but I certainly can appreciate a good comeback story.

If you feel like you're stuck in a rut

A very interesting and enlightening read! This book actually shows how to take the steps to change your life to one that is more rewarding and way more fulfilling. Unlike many other self-help, self motivation books, Dr Connor uses a compelling, real life perspective on doing so. If you feel like you're stuck in a rut, this book will definitely show you how to change that.

One can find out how to train the cats just like people do with dogs. Yes, cats can be trained just like dogs. That is something I never thought was possible unless you were a magician. Readers will learn how to train their cats, the differences between cats and kittens, bathing their cats and much more. I found this informative and easy to read book this best how to guide for us cat owners. I know of one stubborn cat who doesn't like baths and this book helped out a lot. I highly recommend this to readers everywhere. Anne Meyers definitely knows how to write a well informed book that gives readers a ton of useful information on training their cats. Overall, I rate this a five out of five stars.

A powerful and provocative look at attempts to limit the right to vote

This book provides a superb history of the events leading to the Voting Rights Act, and the history of the impact of the Voting Rights Act, including countless efforts to limit the voting or impact of minority voters. The book also makes clear that the impetus behind voter fraud concerns and restrictions on early voting and registration is really an attempt to limit the voting of the poor and minority voters. Royal Masset, the former executive director of the Texas Republican party said that "anyone who says that a lack of voter ID won't discriminate against otherwise legal minority voters is lying" and said voter ID laws were "sheer racism" designed to suppress Democratic voters (at 259-260). Cutbacks in early voting hours were defended by the Republican party chair in Ohio who said we "shouldn't contort the voting process to accommodate the urban-read African-American-voter-turnout machine" (at 264).

easy to read

I really enjoyed reading Give Us The Ballot. Berman brought the subject of voting rights with all its historic, legal, racial, human, and political implications to life through the stories of the people whose votes were denied, made difficult, or deliberately weakened.

Weaving the story of John Lewis, the great civil rights leader throughout the account created an element that connected me into the struggle, victories, and defeats of voting rights. Understanding the role Chief Justice John Roberts has played in the Voting Rights struggle was new information for me.

This book was an easy, engaging read which helped me develop a better understanding and deeper appreciation for the issue of Voting Rights. I highly recommend this book.

A riveting book

Ari Berman's recent book, "Give Us the Ballot", is a tour de force when it comes to describing how the Voting Rights Act of 1965 became law and the desperate and vicious attacks since then on that law. It's no surprise that southern states, long in their own history of violence and voter suppression, figure heavily here. It's a shameful record.

While events leading up to the passage of the Voting Rights Act are well documented and narrated by the author, the real interest for me as a reader is what has happened since. The book really begins to crackle when Berman describes the 2000 presidential election and the mischief that occurred in Florida. Leave it to misfits like Katherine Harris to disregard the votes of so many Floridians. Yet unbelievably, it is Chief Justice John Roberts who leads the charge as protagonist to new voting restrictions. Through purges in voter rolls and new restrictions on voter ID and early voting, reading this book makes one think that all or most of the progress that has been made since 1965 has been lost. When Moral Monday protests occurred in North Carolina in 2014 a prescient sign reading "Welcome to North Carolina/turn your watch back 50 years" provided an accurate feeling of how so few in southern state legislatures can cause so much damage in such a short space of time.

"Give Us the Ballot" is an exceptionally well-crafted and documented book. The personal stories of many voters who were not allowed to register and/or vote are presented here and their reflections are all too sad... and yet for them, necessary to be related to readers. I highly recommend "Give Us the Ballot" because it tells the story of how a great country of ours can be reduced by those people in power who can't see the forest for the trees."

Lukacs is a familiar name in World War II studies. These two volumes, released in 1990 and 1976, respectively, follow the key players on the other side of the Atlantic. The duelists in the first title are Churchill and Hitler, and this book covers the pivotal 80-day period in 1940 when the Germans were poised to crush British forces and invade the empire. The Greatest Crisis of the Twentieth Century

This book is one of the most thrilling that I have ever read. It is about the 83-day period from May 10, 1940, on which day coincidentally Winston Churchill became Prime Minister of Great Britain and Adolf Hitler launched the German Army against the Western Front, until July 31, 1940, on which day coincidentally President Franklin Roosevelt decided that America would actively support England against Germany and Hitler decided that he would not after all invade England.
The author conceives of this period as the theater of a personal duel between the titanic figures of Churchill and Hitler (as he notes, the German word is "Zweikampf", a fight of two) during which Hitler had his best chance of winning what Lukacs called in an earlier book "the last European war". That this figure of monstrous gifts, as he is described by the author, did not win was the achievement of Churchill, who knew after the fall of France that England and its Commonwealth could not prevail against the power of Germany without America and Russia on its side, but willed that England would not negotiate with Germany until events or persuasion would bring these powers into the war against Naziism. Lukacs acknowledges that the overwhelming power of Russia and America was necessary to defeat Germany, but Churchill's achievement was that England did not lose the war.
In a later book, "Five Days in London, May, 1940", the author focuses on the period from May 24 to May 28, 1940 within the period of The Duel. Although this five-day period preceded the fall of France, Lukacs identifies it as the period of most acute crisis because the British War Cabinet came close to deciding that England should begin cease-fire negotiations with Germany. It was Churchill's eloquence and force of character that swayed the members of the government, and ultimately the British people, to reject this idea and fight on alone until Germany launched the invasion of Russia. In "The Duel" he deals with this crisis in a chapter called "The Slippery Slope", a metaphor used by the participants to describe the demoralization of the British public that would have resulted from peace negotiations that might have resulted in a surrender to Germany's demands.
Another reviewer has remarked, correctly I think, that there is some overlap and repetition in the several books by the author that deal with Churchill and/or Hitler. However, the author possesses such a powerful narrative drive and brilliance of insight into the psychology of his subjects and significance of events that the repetition of phrases from one book to the next has the effect of a recurring melody in a symphony.
I have had the privilege to meet and talk with the author about his work. In my first conversation with him about "The Duel" I told him that from his book I had learned both how close Hitler came to winning the war and how much we owe to Churchill. He commented that I had understood his book very well.

The Race is Not to the Swift, Nor the Battle to the Strong.

John Lukacs' book "The Duel" calls to mind the classic hypothetical paradox that asks what happens when an irresistible force meets an immovable object. In this instance the irresistible force was Adolf Hitler and his armed forces and the immovable object was Winston Churchill.

The duel that is the subject of this book takes place in the tumultuous 80-day period between May 10, 1940 and July 30, 1940. Lukacs surrounds the recitation of this 80-day period with two coincidences. On May 10, 1940 Churchill became Prime Minister, replacing Neville Chamberlain. At the same time the battle for Western Europe began in earnest when Hitler launched land and air attacks on Holland, Luxembourg, and Belgium. On July 31, 1940 Hitler began making formal plans for the invasion of the USSR. On that same day U.S. President Franklin Roosevelt decided to go forward with a lend-lease program that would provide the British navy with 50 aging, but much needed destroyers.

Events in May and early June provided evidence that Hitler and his advancing armies were something of an irresistible force. The German army and air force made quick work of Holland, Luxembourg, and Belgium. France and its forces were defeated in short order as well. At the same time, in these dark early days, Churchill's hold on power was tenuous at best. As Lukacs is quick to point out, the ousted Chamberlain was more popular amongst Conservative party loyalists. Churchill's only real popular support according to surveys cited by Lukacs came from working class (labour) voters. Hitler and the U.S. Ambassador to Britain Joseph Kennedy both seemed to think that, if anything, Churchill was an easily removable force. Facts, as Lukacs points, proved both Hitler and Joseph Kennedy wrong.

The Duel is set out in a point-counterpoint fashion. It alternates between examining the war from the German and then British viewpoint. Although Lukacs is a long-time admirer of Churchill (and with good reason) his analysis of events and of the character and judgments of both Churchill and Hitler seems both astute and objective. Lukacs avoids the easy picture of Hitler as madman and is quite prepared to give him credit for the efficacy of his military plans and his ability to think rationally (and often brilliantly) about military and political developments in Western Europe. Similarly, Lukacs is not above criticizing some of Churchill's decisions or pointing out many of the mis-steps that occurred during this period.

The critical events of the 80 days covered by Lukacs'seem to me to be the successful evacuation of 350,000 British and French troops from Dunkerque in early June, Hitler's subsequent decision to not proceed with plans for the invasion of Britain, and his eventual decision at the end of July to invade Russia. Lukacs makes it clear that the German armies could have been a bit more aggressive and could have taken most of those evacuated from Dunkerque prisoner. Yet Hitler grew unusually cautious at this critical juncture. There is some evidence to suggest that Hitler thought the British would seek peace in short order but Lukacs suggests that this evidence may not be totally persuasive. Lukacs does suggest however, that if those troops had not been evacuated successfully the forces in Britain seeking reconciliation or negotiation with Hitler may have won the day.

The `duel' ends in a stalemate. Five gruesome years of war would follow. However, in terms of the classic irresistible force/immovable object paradox the stalemate clearly benefited the immovable object. Churchill, as a rational thinker, could not have entertained the belief that he could have won any major battles during this period. However, the commodity most precious to him and for the future of parliamentary democracy in Britain, was not victory but time. Britain needed time to gather strength and, most importantly, time to seek assistance from the United States. That assistance was very slow in coming. Roosevelt was in the middle of an election campaign and the forces of isolation were still very strong in the United States. By doing enough to forestall invasion, and aided by Hitler's decision to divert attention to the Soviet Union, Churchill gained the time he needed. The British armed forces were not particularly swift nor strong but in time they would be. Churchill's desparate struggle to 'buy' that time may in fact represent his finest hours.

The Duel is a very readable popular history of a very critical time in Europe's (and the world's history). His portrayal of both Hitler and Churchill seems balanced and objective. This is a very well written book that can be enjoyed equally by casual or serious students of this period. It is a good book and it is well worth reading.

Good work but repetitive

John Lukacs is without doubt one of the most creative and original historians of our time. To add further to his credit he writes as fine as any novelist, probably better than most of them. And most of his perpectives and theories are original thought provoking, and so much based on comman sense and insights that they are almost impossible to prove wrong.
In this intresting and compelling study Lukacs shows that, in May 1940 there really were a turning point in the historical development of the 20th century. He also shows that Hitler there and then, could have won the war if Britain would have given up. Lukacs criticize the idea that the "great-men" have no influence in the historical flow, and the marxist idea that only the great workings of the masses of people, and economical development is the engine of History. Lukacs again points out that without Hitler, Stalin or Chruchill the history of th 20th century would have been much different. In "The Duel" he points out Churchill as the driving force to make the brittish continue in their resistence to Hitler. In the psychological duel that continued over the 80 days Churchill succeded to rally the entire Brittish people behind him. Hitler, who never thought of invading Britain, becuse he was convinced the British would give in, when France was conquered. First in July did he realize that Britain would continue the war alone, that he would have to invade Britain to end the war. But then it was already to late, when the german airforce was unsuccesfull in destroying the RAF, he postponed the invasion of Britain. Later as Lukacs shows, he conviced himself that to invade Russia would be better. His main argument before the invasion of Russia was that it was the only way to make Germeny the sole ruler of Europe, and with the entire continents vast material reasources at his disposel, he would be untouchable even by the awesome powers of a future UK-US alliance.
All this is well written and make a great deal of common sense. But their is one disturbing annoyance. Having read a couple of Lukacs books, is that he continue to repeat the same themes in book after book, soon you have read it all before, and know exactly what points is going to come next. Approximately one third of this book I had read before in his other books and that is really disturbing. I can undersatnd that the author wants to clearify his points, and his remarkeble many good insights, in all his books, but the reader wants new and different perspectives. Althoug a geat book if this is the first time you read one of Lukacs books, its repetitive for those more familiar with Lukacs other works.
