Belgian surrealist painter Rene Magritte's mother committed suicide by drowning herself when he was 13. Spitz, a psychoanalytic critic, interprets his enigmatic paintings as signs of a lifelong struggle with this loss. In this dense but intriguing scholarly miscellany, Spitz (Art and Psyche) muses on the absurd as manifested in Chekhov's play The Bear and in Freud's dissection of jokes; interprets Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance as an avant-garde postmodernist work; and explores themes of nonconformity and rebellion in the film Dead Poets Society and in Calvin and Hobbes, a comic strip whose six-year-old protagonist creates a florid fantasy life with his toy tiger. Captivated and marvelously inspired by the disjunctive visions of the surreal Magritte, she devotes nearly half these associatively written contemplations to the labyrinth that is his work. In her view, the suicide of Magritte's mother looms as the primary motivation for his "painted puzzles" and the source of his personal eccentricity. Spitz follows her meditations on Magritte with literate observations on snippets of drama, Hollywood film, and icons of popular culture. Writing across the disciplines, she discourses on absurdity and the joke and reviews Chekhov, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Dead Poets Society, and the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes. Sure, you can find out how to buy your very own Dom Perignon-flavored sorbet or a CD of "Music for Healthy Pets." But you'll also stumble upon objects like the cute little bright green Russian-made PFM-1 antipersonnel mine, "a favorite toy of generations of Afghan children" punished for their curiosity by a double whammy of liquid explosive and tiny blades. This is a wonderful collection of objects, truly an artistic selection of eye-popping, category-crossing, often beautiful things. Each object also has a very very nice description, laying out who made and why, and giving an idea of how it functions. You get battery-operated tongues - think of the uses you can put that to! - and scores of traditional objects such as funery slippers and straw hats or cow-tail medicinal brushes. It is a feast for the imagination, funny, and provocative.
Recommended for industrial designers and art lovers alike.

Fantastic book of thoughtful questions

I have done a lot of personal growth work so I wasn't sure how useful this book would be for me. I was pleasantly surprised that there were a number of thought provoking questions that I have taken time to answer and will continue to spend time exploring about myself. This book is well worth the price and time it takes to read it and answer the questions that you most relate to. I very much recommend this book to anyone is who is new to personal growth as well as for personal growth junkies like myself.

Barrie Davenport is one of the most thoughtful writers around. Barrie's books are written in such a way that a reader can embark within moments on a pathway leading to deeper connection with self and with the world. She is interested in the questions we each need to answer in a lifetime and she makes them approachable and engaging. Any reader working with these questions can very quickly find themselves waking up into a happier,more authentically engaged life.

The questions are designed to really make you think about exactly what you want for your life and how to overcome the self-doubt and confusion that holds you back. The Coconut Oil Bible lives up to its name!

I found the book Coconut Oil Bible to be extremely informative and useful. I really enjoyed the comparison of coconut oil to other oils, I enjoyed the step-by-step explanation of how coconut oil is made and used, and I really enjoyed the difference in learning what each type of coconut oil does. It fascinates me how coconut oil can be used for so many different things, many of which I would've never known about until I read this book! This book is a new favorite of mine on my iPhone Kindle and I will continue to reference that everyone I know for any ailment there is because, apparently coconut oil can help with everything!
The book itself however is very well-written. It's very concise and very easy to read, while still featuring lots of support and good detail. I look forward to reading other books from this author as well and I would highly encourage anyone interested in learning more about coconut oil and it's natural remedies to read this book.

Before reading this book I had no idea what coconut oil was for/can do until now...I'm blown away with all that I have learned concerning coconut oil & it has so much info + quite a few recipes. I 101% recommend this book, trust me You will not regret it ; - )

About the Author

Dr. Ahmad Fakheri is a professor of mechanical engineering at Bradley University. He received his undergraduate and graduate degrees, all in mechanical engineering, from the University of Illinois in Urbana/Champaign. His teaching and research interests are in the area of thermal sciences. Since 1985, he has taught many different undergraduate and graduate-level courses, developed four new ones―including an intermediate heat transfer course―and published over 50 refereed papers. Dr. Fakheri has served in a number of leadership positions at Bradley University and in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and is a fellow of the ASME.

Not for me

This book is sometimes hard to understand. It has complicated math derivations and skips steps.

WORST OF ALL the binding does not hold up. Chunks of pages are falling out of the book. This is not an isolated incident as nearly all of my 30 classmates are experiencing the same problems.
